The New York Times discusses the trends in PC case design in a piece titled "The Beige Box Fades to Black," which notes new case styles/coloring from Dell, HP, Compaq, Gateway, and Sony: "But the real innovator in computer design and the use of color has been Apple since Steven P. Jobs returned to the company in 1997."

    Steve made black cases...

Two decades ago. Which, at this rate, we can expect the PC world to have half-soccer-ball-flat-panel computers around 2022 or so.

    The Dell iQuack. =)

    The cave.

Who the f*** doesn't realize this "fact?" There is only one Jonathan Ives, and he works for Apple.

    Totally wrong

Black may have been the cat's meow back around 1985/6, but today it looks about as dated as beige, if not more so. Windows box makers truly are clueless.

    and they reply:

Why spend a little money to make nice designs when the c*** we are making sells like hotcakes?

    Black isn't better

This reminds me of office furniture. once it was all battleship grey, then it was all black. That lasted a very short time - just until everyone realized that BLACK SOAKS UP LIGHT and can be depressing to work with.

Black computers are a fad that will disappear quickly. Hopefully, people will go back to platinum (Mac beige) which is cheery without showing as much dirt as white. There's a REASON they chose beige.

'Course the other fun trend now is clear cases...

...but the market share thing is just a jab the reporter should've seen through, the real reason for the delay was as the reporter noted the lack of black cd-roms and floppy drives!

    Love Black

I think black is great! It can go with any color of any room or office! Its timeless, unlike the fruit colored macs and flower power c*** that is highly dated!

    No designer.

I love blacks, too. I also love whites and yellows and browns. So sue me; I'm worldly. Am I leaving anyone out?

Peace in the Mid East.® Sharon and Arafat can go kill f*ck themselves.

    Black has a fault

It's probably not wise to have a black computer in a room that receives a lot of sunlight. That fan will be in "overdrive" all day long.

How about a non-coloured computer. Mold the case with the raw, un-dyed materials and whatever comes out, comes out.

Would they all be the same or have unique swirly, soupy design?

    Who cares?

Apple should stop worrying so much about color coordinating their computers and spend more time on their motherboards. Their buses are 1/4 the speed of intel's, and with bus speed there is no such thing as a "MHz Myth", assuming they are all the same width, which they are. A 1 GHz G4 is also quite pathetic next to a 2.4 GHz Pentium IV. Brute GHz overcomes the superior efficiency of the PPC design.

In other words, the PC box makers focus on what really matters, the inside, while Apple tries to distract buyers from the inferior guts with pretty cases.
