ZDNet's David Coursey quickly extended his single-month Mac test drive period -- in which he attempts to realize the full potential of the Mac and its viability as a workplace platform -- to three months and seven columns. Over that time, Coursey admits that he has become accustomed to the Mac platform and praises it for its advantages over Microsoft Windows. "I like this little iMac and don't want to give it up."

Huh.

This continues to amuses me since Coursey was whining about the way Apple horribly wronged him by giving Time the scoop on the G4 iMac prior to it's 'official' rollout at Macworld. I also seem to recall him berating the design of the new iMac.

Compared with what's out there for Wintel users, that would make the Mac look bad. We do very well in the high-end Web development tools like DreamWeaver/GoLive, and even BBEdit rocks, but for a consumer-level Web page creator, I'm afraid the Mac doesn't have much going for it.

I sure would like a Carbon version of Visual Page, PageMill, or Claris Home Page

Having no RealPlayer is indeed a pain in the a** right now. It's still fairly popular with webmasters who haven't latched on to QuickTime yet. In a few years, Real won't exist and it won't matter. They haven't even issued a statement regarding OS X have they? Losers.

...is a huge problem. I know of two people close to me who boldly ventured into OSX, only to discover they couldn't use RealPlayer without booting classic. Let's just say they quickly booted back to 9 and haven't returned. Sigh.

maffioso, you lack a sense of humour. He was kidding. I didn't notice anything immature about his post that indicated he was 12. In fact, he made an insightful comment on how David Coursey was convinced he liked the Mac he was given, but he wouldn't be if he was asked to purchase a Mac like everyone else.

You totally missed he was kidding and them assumed he was young and personally insulted him. The way I see it, he's not the idiot here.

Has he ever tried iTools?

I know it is somewhat restrictive, but the templates aren't loud and hideous like most apps and I can't think of a better way for the average consumer to get prebuilt photo albums, resumes and movie files uploaded and hosted for free. The iDisk is drag and drop and iPhoto makes creating photo slideshows a no brainer.

I dig Freeway and PageSpinner for the price and additional features, but my folks have had great success with iTools with no investment and a point and click learning curve that's hard too beat.

Why doesn't apple carbonize claris homepage or buy pagemill and call it iWeb or iPage or something. They could make tons of templates like they have at mac.com and they could make the pages be able to call applescripts for interactive pages. would be my choice for the next iApp.

I don't miss realplayer on osx. I have to use Windoze at work and realplayer sux on it too. However I do like windows media player for osx more than the os9 version. with that and quicktime i'm happy.

I can't even get the OS X version of Windows Media Player to install -- keeps saying my Internet Plug-Ins folder doesn't exist, when it quite well does.

A few months ago, I did manage to get it installed but it refused to play almost every Windows Media video stream. Seemed pretty pointless to me, so I deleted it.

Decided to give it another try yesterday, and got that error. Of course I wish everyone would just use QuickTime, or at the very least, Microsoft would port a working version of Media Player to OS X... but until one of those happens, I feel like I'm at a bit of a disadvantage by using OS X. Which really sucks, because I absolutely love X.

RealPlayer ?

QuickTime is great but won't play streaming content through the firewall in my company. Nor does RealPlayer. Only Windows Media Player gets it right. Anyway, I don't see the use of RealPlayer anymore or should I say sites using Real technology should move to either Windows Media Player or - even better - QuickTime. It's sad users don't understand that QuickTime is far more than a media player. People don't always see how much QT is used by MacOS (don't know about QT on Windows) to convert files.

About David Coursey, hmm, that's the first time he ever says something intelligent. I guess we'll have to give him some credit this time.
