Microsoft today announced OS X drivers for its Microsoft line of keyboards (in addition to the mouse/trackball drivers released a few weeks ago). The company says that the new keyboard driver will work with all operating systems up to OS 10.1.2 (with drivers already available for Mac OS 8.6 and 9.x).

    **BUYUKA BUYUKA**

    Professor Chaos strikes again.

So does anyone know what the keyboard drivers allow? Does it allow you to use the special keys (like the hot keys)? I'd like a keyboard that lets me control iTunes (next track, previous track, pause) without bringing iTunes forward.

Oh, and can you use the Microsoft Wireless Mouse and Keyboard with these drivers?

    Tanx...

    Where are they?

Can these be downloaded anywhere? The only ones M$ is offering are the Classic drivers, with a Classic installer.

    Typical!

So M$ has a keyboard driver that does NOT work with the current version of OS X (only up to 10.1.2).
Gee, I would have expected better from a major company like M$ (yeah right!).

    Where Are They ?

Ok, so where are they ?

I checked every page possible, and they still only list the IntelliKey Pro software for Classic OS.

Microsoft makes ONE thing that I am really fond of. The Office Keyboard. I purchased one last week after I heard the drivers for OS X were coming this month, and after seeing that Best Buy had it on sale for $39.

It's been sitting in the box every since.

I tried it (knowing that the special features woudln't work). Ever tried to eject a CD when there's no button for it?

The inability to eject the CD Drawer to insert a CD was the main reason I had to take it off the LCD iMac.

    Ejecting...

On any USB Keyboard, the F12 key should work as an eject button. It works on my M$ Natural Keyboard Pro.

And for the rest of you suffering from intentionally unsupported keyboards, there's a driver someone wrote to swap the option & command keys, which are reversed on M$ keyboards (at least Natural Pro).

Where do you want to go today? Why, I'd like to take the next year-and-a-half writing drivers to support $70 peripherals! Evil monkeys.

    What the new drivers do

The new OS X drivers say they will do what the old drivers did - which is Fkey support, support for all the bells and whistles keys on Internet Pro keyboards (like volume up and down, forward and back in browsers and Prev Track, Next Track in iTunes). Oh, yea - maybe even they can get the sleep button to work.

    Switches positions of key

Another feature of the classic drivers is switching the position of the Apple and Option keys.

Apple usually puts the Apple/Command key(s) on the inside (closer to the space bar) and the Option/Alt keys on the outside. By default the Microsoft keyboards switch these positions.

This annoys and frustrates my fingers, so much so that I had to put identifying stickers on the keys.

    key positions

Del Vach mentioned a file that switches the command/option keys around at the following link:

    http://www.montalcini.com/macosx/index.html

I've been using it since it first came out (back in the 10.0.x days) and it's been a godsend.
It'll be nice to have the official M$ drivers so I can use the media buttons once again.

    Driver Download

The Mactopia page has not been updated, but by going to the MS main download page and searching by product, I was able to locate the download: IntelliType3.0_OSX.sit

    I haven't tried them yet.
