4D today announced 4D v6.8, which brings support for OS X (as well as Windows XP) to its web-enabled cross-platform database development solution. The free update for all registered v6.7 users allows current customers to migrate 4D applications without modifying any underlying code. Version 4.8 also improved contextual menu support, better plug-in administration, and new commands and constants as well as more security options, an integrated TCP/IP component, and interface enhancements such as floating, dockable toolbars under OS X. It is expected to be released on Wedneday, April 17th.

    4D Costly to Use :(

4D is great, however, if you are new to 4D, be sure to find out how much the licensing and deployment fees will cost you. The information is not easy to find at 4D's web site. Here are a few:

    - $65 per compiled app. Create an application, compiled it and give it to 10 people and you owe 4D $650.

    - If your application uses the built-in web server (or even if it doesn't use the built-in web server - but does web stuff), add $899 per application that is run. They call this the WEL (Web Extension License).

    Free distribution :-)

    Well,

4D Standard edition comes with a free unlimited interpreted distribution capability. Albert is correct when he says we charge a per seat fee for compiled. Depending on the volume it can go down to about $12 per copy at the 100 user level for Partners. OEM Agreements are available for higher volumes.

    Free for Me

So if I use 4D just for my own use, it's free for me, right? I've been waiting a long time to upgrade. I'm on version 3.5.3. It has been running amazingly well in Classic. Is there anyone who could tell me what it would take to get my existing DB up and running in v 6.8?

    4D Licencing

Thats really interesting. My dad uses 4D to write some programs, your saying that if he compiles it and sells it he owes 4D money. I know he has to purchase a copy of the runtime for every customer he sells to, is there more than that?

Also a BIG 'thank you' for making the OS X version a free upgrade, I've been trying to convince my dad to go OS X on his machines, and this might help :)

    Free Distribution :(

Who would distribute interpreted unprotected 4D databases? They run too slow and the source code is not protected.

What development companies charge per seat for a compiled applications? Is there that much overhead in developing the Compiler? Or, do you know that interpreted distribution isn't really an option for most?

The pricing structure that you have scares away most new developers to 4D.

    re:4D Licensing

Let me try to answer the two different questions:

    1. 4D is not free. When you acquire 4D, you get a license to distribute unlimited interpreted applications. If you want to create Apps for your friends or shareware then you can distribute these apps for free

    2. Regarding the question about your father distributing 4D Compiled applications, if the customer is purchasing the runtimes then he doesn't owe us money. However if he wanted to distribute his compiled app with 4D Engine he can pre-purchase the "runtimes"from us if he wishes.

Thank you for noticing the free upgrade :-)

    Regards

    4D Licensing

If you purchase a copy of 4D Runtime for each copy that you distribute, your dad would be able to distribute a compiled 4D database without anything else to buy!

If your dad, uses the built-in Web server in 4D, your dad would have to pay 4D $899. If your Dad uses 4D Write, your dad would owe 4D more money. If you Dad used other 4D modules, he would owe more money to 4D.

    Free distribution :-)

    Albert,

Many FMP developers distribute interpreted solutions quite successfully. Also it is untrue to say the source code is easily available, first it is password protected and secondly if you are really worried about your source then you can encrypt your source code using component technology available since 4D 6.7. In fact we have enhanced the encryption capabilities in 6.8 to offer you further protection.

It seems like you have a real gripe with our pricing that I would like to understand. Please email me at bcoveney@4d.com as I would like to discuss this further with you to understand your needs.
