Microsoft has quietly shelved plans for My Services, a centerpiece product in the .Net Internet software strategy, according to New York Times editor John Markoff. Originally codenamed "Hailstorm" the development project fell apart as "they [Microsoft] ran into the reality that many companies don't want any company between them and their customers."

    Privacy ?

Protection of privacy and Microsoft ? That's a bit too contradictory I believe. Who would trust MS ? I really hope the .Net project fails - who would like to use a system where the operating company will know everything about the user ? - but I'm afraid all the Wintel users will buy it anyway. Still, I feel blessed I've been touched by Jesus, oops not him, by Apple. Things come to my mind as strong character, individuality, freedom of computing, you know, what Apple has meant ever since the introduction of the Macintosh, possibly before that too.

    double surprise

I don't know what surprises me more, that Microsoft would abandon what it saw as a significant portion of its future or that MacNN has people updating their website with this story at 12:35 in the morning! Good job catering to us raging insomniacs :o)

    LOL!

    YES!

Let's hope the entire dot net initiative crumbles as users realize exactly what it means for security, privacy, and even cost. My guess is that most people don't really want to "rent" application computing time.

But then Americans run to Windows like lemmings, even in the face of system crashes and difficulty of use. They also like to vote for politicians bought and paid for by corporations. Why would they change now?

    Timing is everything

Just a few years ago Micro$haft had so much clout in the industry and so many dumb blind followers that I'm sure they would have pulled it off.

These days, the numerous lawsuits have at least brought up to bright daylight all their unlawful and treacherous practices so that companies large and small have finally understood that everything that comes from Redmond is a lie (well, not everything, but when it's not a lie it's a bug ;)

In other news, Xbox is an utter failure in Japan and won't meet sales expectations in the U.S., despite the hundreds of millions spent on marketing.

    That says it all

From the Microsoft website, quote :

"Microsoft .NET My Services (formerly code-named "HailStorm") is a family of user-centric Web services that, when available in 2002, will open new opportunities for the software industry. This new application paradigm enables businesses to build deeper customer relationships and improve operational efficiency, and makes applications and devices easier for consumers to use."
Waow ! Does that mean customers will be f*cked up ? Guessso.

eee didn't mention that the Xbos is not doing well at all in Europe either. It's more expensive than its competitors and you need to buy a remote control (as I understand it) to use your console as a video DVD player. The PS2 is way cheaper and can play video DVD without any additional cost. And the upcoming Nintendo GameCube won't help MS much. I simply love it.

    Does that mean

I can't store all my browsing habits, software licenses, account balances, credit-card numbers, and medical records on a wicked secure Windows .Net server somewhere deep in the bowels of the Redmond Campus?

    I AM SO BUMMED!!!!!!!!
