Navy anti-Mac?

updated 05:45 pm EST, Tue December 12, 2000

Federal Computer Week has posted a story about the demise of Macintosh hardware in the U.S. Navy, citing Electronic Data Services Corp.'s decision not to support it in its eight-year contract. "The Naval Air Systems Command once had more than 10,000 Apple users, but their numbers have dwindled in recent years as Navair chief information officers in China Lake, Calif., and Patuxent River, Md., have restricted purchases of non-Microsoft Corp. systems."

    Pay to play

The message is very simple, Apple needs to pay to play in the goverment market. In this case, the party with the open palms is EDS. Supporting Windows is an expensive proposition, but for EDS it is a money-making proposition. Apple needs a "strategic relationship" with EDS to ensure that Macintosh computers don't get locked out.

    Not very Bright to begin

I was in the Navy and I can tell you first hand that the Navy does not want any Macs. The people responsible for purchasing computers have no clue what windows machins can do let alone Macs. They go mainly by size of the following. And since Apple only has about 10% of the market they have no place in the Navy. I sure am sorry that these people are so narrow minded.

    Facts

Back when the Mac DID have 10-12% marketshare, those "10,000" machines made their way into the Navy. It's more like 3% now.

Besides, trying to divide by zero and crapping out could just as easily happen to a Mac.. so then how'd we all get such a good laugh if a warship got waylaid by a Mac?

    EDS

Gee...I worked with several EDS people 5-6 years ago on government contract proposals...they were all walking around with Powerbooks that had been furnished by EDS. What happened?

    I read somewhere

I read somewhere that government often specifies things like 800 MHz or faster CPU. So how can Apple possibly compete with that? It's not like they can go in and change the procurement process, any more than they can change 95% of the population's naive assumptions about megahertz == speed.

    May it happen to them

Just a few short years ago, make that two, a warship on exercise was stranded at sea when a Microsoft NT server, the main one for the ship, crapped out.

May that happen to the Nave too during an exercise and lets see if they reverse that decision.

    To the facts bozo

For computers on warships, you can go look it up, the Navy is opting for Windows NT.
With OS X around the corner, if a mac were monitoring operations on a warship it could take a licking and keep on ticking.

It fits in very well with the Clinton/Gore hate of the military. Give the Chinese missle secrets, and put a sub-standard, easily hacked platform on a military ship... so what else is new.

    open source

well that's not exactly ideal for us Mac users that the Navy is no longer using Macs, but what disturbs me more is that they're using windows.

i believe that Government institutions should be using open source software, especially the military. it's more stable and standards compliant, and having access to the sourcecode ensures that it is secure as well. also any changes the Government needs made to their software are distributed back to the community, instead of just putting all that money into the pockets of Microsoft.

so it's a shame they're not using Macs (i happen to like MacOS like the rest of you), but really, the government is supposed to be for the people, and to that end, should be forced to use open source software, or pay to have software created for them that is in turn open sourced.

    Apple Deserves This

Basically Apple has dug itself into its own hole. And Technically they own a monopoly on the Mac Market. They control what me and you can use and buy. How much we spend, whats available for the platform. Lets see how much Apple cares...they have done little pressuring to get Motorola to release faster machines, they rip us off big time, i mean 5000$ for WHAT? Nothing! EVERYTHING IS SO GOD DAMN EXPENSIVE and no one wants to support the mac. It's the little people who by PC's and Apple just isn't capturing them, my next cpu is gonna be a PC simply b/c i can no longer support Apple with all this money they want =(
