Apple acquires Zayante FireWire developer

Apple today announced that it has acquired Zayante, a leader in FireWire technology. Zayante's president and CEO Prashant Kanhere will join Apple to promote the adoption of FireWire technology. "By acquiring Zayante, Apple is extending its commitment to FireWire as the premiere, high-speed digital interface solution," said Jon Rubinstein, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

What are the implications of this? If Apple invented FireWire, then why buy a FireWire maker? What's so special about what thZayante does with FireWire?

Interesting Moves

Apple seems to be doing some interesting positioning with Mac OS X and recent maneuvering and acquisitions.

First, expanding the Mac community by pulling in UNIX people, software and other resources with Mac OS X. Acquiring Raycer 3D chip maker, that high-end 3D application (name eludes me) developer. And now this FireWire developer.

As pure speculation, Apple seems to positioning itself to put together some kind of total media development and creation package; hardware, software and interconnectivity.

I wouldn't be surprised to see plenty of socks blown off sometime in the near future. Maybe @ MacWorld NYC?

i think that post may have been referring to the interstellar buildup of hype preceding the macworld sf this january. even by apple's standards, that was gi-normous. not to say the imac is any small potatoes (thank god it's finally shipping in decent numbers now), and much of the insane speculation was reader and rumor-driven. but still...

expanding digital hub

This acquisition allows Apple to expand its digital hub strategy substantially at both the consumer and the pro level.
Zayante's technology could be behind all kinds of prosumer/pro related digital cameras, set-top boxes, servers that are moving large media files.

A couple of interesting applications are Zayante's ability to do firewire over IP for super-high speed file transfer with the benefits of network security, connectivity, etc. (no more firewire target mode for exchanging files but a firewire network); and chip level integration of all computer components (i.e. a firewire motherboard bus). This would allow for very fast and very modular motherboards such as firewire connected additional CPUs and memory on the board.

Prestige

Apple is planning to take over a very prestigious market. They are pushing firewire right along with them.

I hope they keep it up.

It will not be very long before everybody knows how much better an Apple computer is then a plain old PC.

I am much happier having a great job, working on a Mac with it's superior innate abilities, than be on a PC stuck in a room full of cubicles ,with it's inert abilities.

This purchase is for

iPod II, which will feature FireWire-less data transfer at speeds up to 1 gigabyte/sec. Raycer 3D was acquired to run the current iPod's interface. That $100 million investment into Samsung LCD production was for the iPod's LCD.

This function allows the Zbox to connect to movie editing system, such as an iMac using iMovie or a PC using MovieMaker.
