PC Mall, which owns the MacMall brand, today announced that it has acquired Pacific Business Systems, which does business under the ClubMac and PBS brands. PBS reported net sales of $84 million for 2001 and has enjoyed eighteen consecutive years of profitability. Under the terms, PC Mall will acquire PBS' customer database, accounts receivable, inventory, certain fixed assets and certain intellectual property in exchange for 300,000 shares of its common stock and a capped three year earn-out with consideration for the future results of the acquired business. PC Mall also said it would extend offers of employment to PBS sales and support employees.

    Too bad

I don't know much about Clubmac, but MacMall/PCMall has the worst service I've ever seen. I ended up filing a complaint with the BBB, although it didn't help much.

    Bummer

Club Mac was one of the only catalog guys I could trust. PCMall was by far the worst. They totally overprice everything.

    Sales taxes

Hmmmm... There goes my tax free ordering of large purchases of Apple systems from Mac Mall living in CA. They have offered some pretty good bundles with systems in the past. Not all is lost, I qualify for the Ed. discount so I be making my purchases directly the Apple store of which there are several nearby. The upside is all have the pleasure of having my new systems almost immediately.

    NOOOOO!!!

I agree with the others that said MacMall has the worst service ever. I also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau over the misrepresentations and lies they used to get my sale. Unfortunately, they claimed it was "out of the scope of their organization", but forwarded my complaint to the Consumer Protection Agency. I still get MacMall catalogs in the mail, but I don't even look at them; they go right in the trash. I'll disagree with tsbruford slightly: I think MacMall often has lower prices and more promotions, but can only afford it because of their incredibly low quality of customer service. I ended up ordering my iMac through ClubMac, with whom I had no problems at all -- my experience with ClubMac was so good, in fact (it'd be hard to beat the s**** job MacMall gave me) that I came back to them for purchases in the future. Now that they're transferring databases, I'll probably be getting twice as many MacMall catalogs!

Oh yeah, the no-tax thing was nice too, since ClubMac didn't have a warehouse in Ohio (however, Ohio makes you report "use tax" on your income taxes for anything you didn't pay sales tax on and brought back into Ohio, such as purchases made on the Internet or from mail-order catalogs, but I don't think anyone does).
