c|net has posted a review praising Apple's new 10GB iPod, which has "made a good thing even better." Pointing out the "near-perfect design" and ease-of-use, the review also covers the additions to the new generation of iPods as well as what could be improved -- namely Windows support.

"No Resume function"

The reviewer says you can't resume play in the middle of a song. Sure you can! Pause your iPod in the middle of a song and after a few moments, it'll go to sleep. Then you can wake it up by hitting Play and it'll be right where you left it off before.

I have a lot of music digitized - I wish I waited for the 10 gig version - I wish this one was upgradable - ebay here I come

Too bad

Too bad Apple didn't lower the price on the 5 GB iPod, and keep the 10 GB model at the $400 mark.

$500 for an external HD/mp3 player?!?! That's insane. It really is. A complete Wintel computer can be bought for only another $100!!

Sometimes I really wonder about Apple. Sure, the margins on this 10 GB iPod are going to be huge, but wouldn't it be better for Apple to boost volume instead of price? I think the magic price point for an mp3 player like the iPod is around $275, maybe $300, at which point it will really begin to move units. And even if Apple's margins are great on a low priced iPod, it would establish a greater presence of Apple products, and this would help Apple out more in the long term than uber-profit margins.

But that's ok. I'll just save my money. Too bad for Apple, they lost another sale because of their ridiculous pricing strategies.

Take a quick visit to CompUSA. You can purchase a ONE GB IBM micro drive for $399 as well. Do some research before whining, please?

20GB iPod

Looks like toshiba has a 20GB version of the same drive, I wonder how long until it will be in an iPod (and how much it would cost).

We've had this discussion before... it seems like everyone knows what the iPod SHOULD be priced at... and its always $200 or $300 less than it is now...

look... the iPod uses components that are significantly more expensive than either a brand new other MP3 player or a standard Firewire-based hard drive.

And who really cares if Apple is making a decent margin from this product? How much do you think R & D for iPod and iTunes has cost over the last year and 3 months? Apple has many more expenses than just production costs. They can't afford to make just a hair over the costs of just the product itself because then they won't have enough of a margin to continue improving it.

And plus, I think that they've proved that the $399 pricepoint is not bad. Even at that "outrageously high price," they MOVE this product. Its been raved by every publication out there, and it seems that EVERYONE i know has one. They've shown that quality products sell every single time, regardless of price. The 10 GB version is only making it better. For an extra $100, why not.

I'd buy one if...

If they were cheaper, I'd buy one. I realize it's not overpriced for what it is, but it's more than I will spend on something with such limited use. I have an iBook that I can carry with me to move files, so for me the MP3 capability is the big seller.

If I could get one with the FM modulator for $200 (either the 5GB or the 10GB), I'd do it. But $400 or $500 is too much for me to spend on a novelty.

This at least the second praise report I've where the only dig they could find is "it ought to support windows".

Don't they know about Xplay and Ephpod? Are they afraid they might help sell a few iPods to windows users? Or are they wanting the windows users to buy an iMac to be able to use an iPod?

Novelty?

Yea, you could carry around your iBook to move files, sure. Who wants to lug around a 5 lb beast when you can have all your contacts, music and files you want to move on something you can carry around in your pocket?

Put a system folder with disk warrior on it and you have a emergency startup disk. And also, you have the added bonus of having all your favorite music to play at work, in the car, while your walking/jogging, at home listening through your home stereo, or at any party you show up to that refuses to play good music.

It is absolutely the best investment I ever made on ANY product. I use it constantly.
