3ivx 4.0PR1, an MPEG-4-compliant video codec, dramatically improves quality and speed as well as compatibility. It can now play most MPEG-4 variants including DivX and adds skip protection and AltiVec support. Additionally, DivX Doctor II, corrects stuttering sound and jerky playback on DivX Movies by updating DivX .avi videos to 3ivx QuickTime (.mov) videos: "After the conversion you will be able to play the video smoothly, and the audio glitches inherrant in the AVI format will be fixed.     Sorry, no. AVI is a general specification, much like QuickTime is. It contains many different codecs. This release adds an important codec to the Mac stable, but there are still many out there that have no Mac support.

    There will likely never be a time when Macs can play all avi movies. But at least we can now play the best avi format.

    Nice! Big improvement over the last version. Much easier and cleaner to use (and works just dandy on a beige G3 with OS 9.2)

    3ivx vs DivX?

    How does 3ivx compare to DivX? Based on my unscientific test of playing an AVI movie, I found 3ivx to produce smoother playback. The file was supposedly encoded at 14.98fps, 3ivx produced about 15fps while DivX produced 14.8fps.

    I noticed too that with both DivX and 3ivx decoders in /Library/QuickTime, 3ivx will "usurp" control over decoding AVI files.
