A new Gartner report indicates that by raising prices across its iMac G4 line, Apple may have taken the most direct route in addressing a problem that the entire personal computer industry is facing. Anaylsts suggest that the increasing prices of RAM and LCD screens have caused much of the problem; RAM prices have quadrupled since December 2001 while components for LCD screens have increased from $25 to $35 on various size displays.

Uh, wasn't this already given back when Steve-o said so? Why a whole news article?

    yes

Apple got bashed for raising iMac prices, then other PC makers followed, now Gartner says everyone should have done it sooner! Usually mac bashing publications stick to just that.

    The Real Reason

for the cost increase and delivery problems: they can't get them to stop playing on the beach, and when they do, Apple has to clean out all that sand!

    Bogus...

I can understand the LCD industry raising prices. There is a shortage of MotherGlass in the industry, and one of the major plants recently had to close down for a reason I can't remember.

But memory. Oh, the memory bandits. These people have NO excuse. If there is ANYTHING in this industry that has been commoditized, and is easy to manufacture, it's the good old RAM chip.

There are no shortages of materials. There are no shortages of FAB's. There is no reason for this whatsoever except pure greed.

You'd think OPEC was in charge of RAM prices sometimes.
