iMac firmware glitch caused iMac delays

An iMac firmware glitch is reportedly one of the reasons that caused delays in the shipment of the new iMacs, according to MacUser UK: "The file, which is only available to Apple internal staff members and official support providers, updates the firmware on the iMac's SuperDrive which improves compatibility with the Maxtor hard drive." The article also notes that there were also production problems with the construction of the arm that connects the iMac's screen to its base, but that this has been solved by building the arm units separately from the main production line.

    Full of c***

Oh, these MacUser people are full of c***. We all know the reason behind the delay was radiation leakages from the internal nuclear power source.

Not to mention that a firmware problem would not have slowed PRODUCTION, just shipping. Why stop production when you can apply a fix at a later date. That point makes no sense at all.

The article says, "It is likely that this contributed to the shipping delays [emphasis added] that have plagued Apple in recent weeks."

The only thing I see about production is the actual arm doohickey. (Yes, that is the technical term.)

    arm problems?

We got our Superdrive iMac some time ago...the screen was crooked by about a degree! Apple said this was within spec.
With that and the problems with the dead pixels (we had none of those with that iMac or the one the Apple Store gave us as a replacement), I'd suggest only buying them from a local store and making them take the thing out of the box and plug it in before you fork over your money.
I wouldn't buy a new car with cracks in the windshield...and I wouldn't care if Ford didn't make that part.

Read the article. It says they had problems with the neck, which slowed down production.

    iMac defects...

Speaking of... Is Quality Control not part of the delay? My Apple logo is crooked (slightly, enough to be annoying) and mine shipped without a mouse (Apple sent one overnight). I would have guessed problems like this were what caused the delays. Ah, well.

    Funny...

My iMac G4/800 doesn't even have a Maxtor hard drive. It has a Seagate U-Series drive. I guess I'm not susceptible to this problem.

    Re: Read the article

I did read the article, and it says (bottom of third paragraph, in discussion of the firmware fix):

The problem will have been rectified on any new machines coming off the production line after the issue was identified, but this would have significantly delayed production.

That's what I based my comments regarding production and shipping.

As for QA problems. Lousy QA wouldn't affect shipments. Good QA would, as they would notice all these things screwed up and not let that computer out the door.
