Adobe today announced Premiere 6.0, a major upgrade to its digital video editing software. The new version offers built-in support for a "large selection" of DV devices, an improved user interface, new editing tools, and the ability to export video in RealMedia, WindowsMedia, and QuickTime formats. There is also a new storyboard window, audio mixer, and several new filters, including 25 from the company's high-end After Effects product. The $550 title will ship in the first quarter of 2001. Users of a previous version can upgrade for $150, while Premiere LE owners can upgrade for $200. International English, French, German and Japanese versions are expected to ship within the first 90 days of the initial release.

    Premiere

Why should I purchase a video editing program from Adobe when I have a low end one available from Apple for $49? Even if I wanted high end video editing, two years of video arts taught me it's with Final Cut Pro

    More and More Like FCP

Is it just me or does Premiere 6.0 look much more like Final Cut than 5.0? I think Adobe knows what's up...of course, so do I. I'll be sticking with FCP, thank you.

    look alikes

It's no coincidence that these two programs look so much alike; the bulk of each program was written by tthe same person.

    Take that.

Granted it mostly looks to be playing catchup to FCP in many areas, and it seems to still have that incredibly amateurish limitation of one sequence per "project", but did you notice?

Realtime VU meters, and a "pro"-like audio mixing interface!

This must be the single most requested feature for FCP. If it's not in the (ridiculously) long-awaited FCP 2.0, we're all gonna want to know damn sure the reason why.
C'mon there, Mr. Ubillos, if your ex-buddies at Adobe can do it, I'm sure your new buddies at Apple can too.

    no MPEG support?

It's nice that they added exporting support for RealMedia and Windows Media, but what about MPEG? The Mac has really crappy support for playing WM files, and don't even get me started on RealMedia... And since most PC users don't have Quicktime installed (either because they never had to or because they don't like it), MPEG is about the best internet standard at this time. Why do I have to get a separate plug-in to get MPEG support? (And if ASF ever takes off, that would be nice too.)

Premiere pales in comparison. Premiere is dead.

    Is there a battle here?

Do any "professionals" really use FCP? I've seen millions of job opportunities begging for Premiere experts, but I've never seen a Final Cut Pro position...

Isn't this battle kind of like the Freehand vs. Illustrator argument? I really like what I've seen with FCP, but I've never actually seen anyone use it. I'll check this new Premiere version out, if only for job security/job mobility.

    Premiere is gone

The last post asked if "professionals" use FCP. Is this guy brain dead or what? I live in Los Angeles and edit with Final Cut Pro on a daily basis. There are a "few" other editors here in town and we all refer to Premiere in the past tense. As in BEFORE there was FCP we used Avid, Media 100 and Premiere.
