Flat-panel materials factor in iMac delay

Giga Information Group vice president Rob Enderle told NewsFactor/osOpinion that a shortage of glass used in the construction of 15" flat-panel display found in the new Apple iMac is a "major factor" in the delay of the product. "The shortages are a result of increased demand for such monitors."

    Why?

Why didn't these guys see it coming? It's probably a lot more complicated than that, sure, but I mean if you see a new technology coming at you full bore, why not be prepared for it? Like I said, it's probably way more involved but at first glance that's what I see.

    NH Techno glass issue

Well now that they are beginning to be able to ramp up production, the delay won't be as long. Though today I found out they are also having trouble getting the parts for some of the LCD transistors and DVD burning drives. It is time Apple started manufacturing all their parts from scratch. Here's the NH Techno glass issue spelled out in no uncertain terms:

    http://www.zdnet.com.au/newstech/communications/story/0,2000024993,20262943-1,00.htm

"NH Techno Glass, one of the bigger LCD glassmakers in the world, was closed recently because of a boron gas spill and will not be able to supply LCD glass substrate until February or March, according to reports from Asian newspapers and analysts. The company's customers include LCD producers Fujitsu, Samsung Electronics, International Display Technology, Chi Mei Optoeletronics and HannStar Display."

This is the primary reason why the iMacs have been delayed. Glass won't be able to be manufactured till this month again in quantity, whenever they are able to recover from this accident. Samsung is Apple's chief supplier.

    Brilliant Insights MORON!

    Yeah, these guys are brilliant. How many *Reasons* are there for iMac delays? The iMac is experiencing Delays because;
    1) Radiation problems ( Plutonium in these??)
    2) Firmware issues
    3) 15" LCD Shortages ( Yet 900 15" LCD's non-Apple @ CompUSA!!)
    4) Apple misjudged how many iMac's would be needed.
( 'course, if they over estimated, we'd be more P O'd)
    5) iMac's require parts from Steve's Home Planet, next space shuttle flight delayed...

    OK, OK, OK!!!!!

Apple invested 200 Million in Samsungs Flat Panel Business. Since NO ONE else uses 15.2" 1156 x 768 WIDE screen LCD's in Titanium G4 Powerbooks, wide aspect Cinema Displays, etc.
DELL uses 200 times as many 15" LCD displays in their Portables ALONE - and they may be F*CKED...but there are TONS of HWP, CPQ, DELL 15" Laptops ( I LOVE PC Laptops almost 90 minutes battery times, only 8-9.5 Lbs

    Corning

Corning makes Apple's flat panel display glass. Corning has cut back manufacturing in every market they play in. Corning has had a very difficult year but I suspect they will be able to ramp up production quickly.

    Many were warned early

I believe that Steve alluded to a high demand, low supply issue when they released the iMac. Since these retail stores didn't get their orders in early enough, they have to wait until after the people that were smart enough to order theirs early are delivered. The Apple Store retailers were smart enough to order theirs early, as did many CompUSA stores. The smaller private stores waited until someone came in and ordered theirs before the store placed its orders. So no Apple is not stocking their shelves first...the supply manager of each store was smart enough to order it when it was released. Besides...there are only 28 Apple Stores nationwide...they can't possibly be the reason for a shortage.
