MacCards returns for one month only

updated 06:00 am EST, Mon December 11, 2000

MacCards, the e-greeting site that eariler this year found itself embroiled in a legal dispute that resulted in the site being taken down, will re-launch today with its "Just think." cards. The site will only be up for the month of December, as creator Simon Jones explains: "I loved creating the cards for the old site and with all this legal red tape I can't ever really do that again. The site will return for one month as my way of saying thanks to everyone who has emailed me through the year with words of support and encouragement."

    MrJones is his own victim

Simon, It is clear to me that you have a thorn in your side and Apple has made you bitter. Get over it. You broke copyright laws and Apple did what it had to do. Sure they could use some lessons in manners but that is beside the point.

If you REALLY enjoy making cards be creative and use another topic. Otherwise, Apple is right in finding your site a one trick pony.

    Yeah, Right!

Maybe if Cupertino focused more on sales and less on bringing down their considerable wrath on someone who was only trying to help the brand out, we wouldn't be in such a mess right now.

Maybe if they had a few less lawyers and a few more software engineers we wouldn't have to put up with all the software instability that we have to put up with.

Maybe if they were run by someone who didn't have such regular snit fits, we might be in better shape. Maybe the company should serve it's customers, not have it's customers serve it.

Nah, we're talking about steve, inc. here. Doesn't apply.

    Well said.

Couldn't agree more with you... Apple's priority list:

    1) improve already-high margins
    2) sell old hardware with one new feature, convince users to upgrade
    3) deny the MHz ocean is a problem
    4) jump on the CD-RW bandwagon 12-24 months late
    5) prevent anyone but Apple from promoting Apple
    6) prevent anyone but Apple from customizing the interface of OS X

Yep, pretty much sums it up.

    Branding

    helping the BRAND?

You have no idea what Branding is if you even remotely believe That Simon Jones was helping Apple's Brand.

His page was about him having a creative outlet using the Apple Brand. If he is unable or unwilling to do anything else, then why feel sorry for him?
Apple is a public company last I checked, not some collective of users. No one at Apple is making any user serve the company, in fact they want to alone direct the message. Which is what Branding is about.

Simin creat as many cards pages as you like but don't use the Apple brand as a crutch. Its time for him to think outside of the different.

Re: Branding-- I couldn't agree more. Anyone who thinks that Simon Jones was perfectly within his right is dead wrong. I can't think of any other "brand", from clothing to computers, that would think that would be okay.

Simon should put his energies into a neutral topics.

    Trademark

And remember, if you don't do something about trademark violations then under the current law you can lose your trademark protections. Apple (and all companies) will always need to track down and stop people from improper use of their trademarks.

    Missing the point

MacCards was not shut down because of trademark or copyright violation, it was shut down because it was better than iCards (which incidently came 9 months after MacCards).

Simon has lots of creative outlets, I think he has about 4 or 5 card sites, as well as a number of other creative and original sites.

Simon WAS a huge Apple evangelist, not any more.

    Other card sites

Marius was asking about other card sites.
Besides the sites mentioned so far, i often use Blue Mountain . There's plenty of free card sites out there. I thiink yahoo has some, I'd bet that MSN has some, you can make your own email cards with Print Master Gold. May brand sites let you send cards with their brand name on them, too. You can even send cards with nude people on them (if there's anyone who would want a card like that). The big question is how many of these site have the idea of collecting email addresses to send spam. I'd bet that the nude card site would get someone on hundreds of spam lists right away.
