Capitol Mac to change owners, remain open

updated 10:00 am EST, Fri March 15, 2002

Following yesterday's note on the closure of Capitol Mac, the company writes that "a last minute tentative agreement has been reached between a yet-to-be announced investor and Capitol Mac. Capitol Mac plans to reopen on Monday, March 18th. Finalization of the purchase is expected today...The liquidation sale planned for tomorrow, Saturday, March 16th has been reduced to a normal closeout sale, with much of the inventory at reduced pricing. The Capitol Mac Service Department will be open as normal on Saturday, and it is expected to remain open as ownership of the company changes hands."

    Speculation

Could they have done this to get free press?

I don't know these people personally, but they could be using the mac news sites such as this to advertise their sale.

Or I could be completely wrong.

I dont known their business, but it seems a bit strange they would say they are closing shop because of the iMac shortage. The thing has only been shipping a little over a month. If their business is that unstable that a bad month would sink them, then I think they shouldn't be blaming Apple for their problem. Seems like there may have been something going on long before the iMac 'shortage'.

    Ruined my day!

I woke up this morning and was told they had gone out of business, I felt a terrible terrible joy. I've been waiting for them to go for soo long.

Now they are not out of business and I am disappointed. Hopefully the new investor will kick out the management that keeps the prices so overpriced and the service so horrible. Management like the poster "synic" on these very forums.

    Out of hand

I think this whole Apple Store first idea is really raging out of control. Personally, I could care less whether Apple stocks it stores first or in greater quanity, why shouldn't they it's their product! At least at the Apple Store a customer gets nice friendly service not like MicroCenter where you are consistently treated like some circus freak, not that there's anything wrong with circus freaks.

    Not the first time

This company has gone out of business before, letting go their staff and reopening later. As a Long time resident, it strikes me funny that they are blaming Apple. I have friends who have used their services and found them, should I say "less than Stellar".

    All for Press

I bet it was all for press coverage... Think of how much money they would have had to spend to get this much coverage of a "Saturday Sale"

Personally, I went to their website and find it interesting that in this day and age, they do not sell products online... (Maybe I missed a link or something?)

It would be nice if the mac machines were in mac only stores and the pc stores everywhere else. I don't think that its right for them to co-mingle under one roof together. . . .it brings out all sorts of people coming out from under the woodwork....

    Capitol Mac website...staleness runs rampant.

Go the the Capitol Mac page and follow the "Store" link and then proceed to the "Mission Statement" link and you will see pictures of their "staff". One small problem, almost none of the individuals depicted are still "on staff". In fact, many of them left Capitol Mac more than a year ago.

Truly a shame since many of these individuals were the stellar people who propelled Capitol Mac into a new store front and out of their former dungeon on Cleveland Street.

This was a group who moved a little known Apple dealer on a back street in the Fan District from sub-$100K sales to multi-million dollar national prominence, including Apple's own award for the number two Apple store on the East Coast.

Moreover, these folks were the cream of the Mac support community crop that was once part of Capitol Mac. Many of the businesses, Advertising agencies, schools, and colleges in Virginia trusted these folks to insure their data integrity and they slept well at night knowing that they were in good hands.

These same individuals are also many of the same folks who have moved on to start their own very successful consulting companies or Mac specialized service providers.

The sad part is that there are still some good folks at Capitol Mac who will probably not survive this latest round of stumbling and bumbling of the company's leadership. Some would say, "oh, that is just business". The fact of life is that ALL of business is about people and good relationships. Without good people, then there is no business.

    The moral of the story...

Good people can do great things if given proper incentive and good leadership. The body can not walk without a clear thinking brain. In any case, a business website should be at least less than a year out of date.

    Online Sales

Well, if they are still using the same POS, the web deployment module for it looked daunting at the least. But then again, this was a system in which every time you updated it you had to completely redo alll of the users, permissions and passwords, how rediculous is that?

Interesting turn of events with the buyout... This is VERY soap opera-esque... Now where is the murder, intrigue and amnesia... Oh yeah, and talking dolls, gotta have talking dolls.
