Apple has announced Apple Remote Desktop for Mac OS X, which enables users to remotely manage other Mac desktops (OS 9 or OS X) anywhere on a local network, Airport, or across the Internet. Users can view desktops, send text chat, provide remote assistance and get comprehensive system profiles. The tool, designed for teachers, students, and administrators, offers secure password protection and is available now for $300 for a single license, or $500 for unlimited licenses.

don't worry about the price -- this isn't supposed to replace timbukto - ie it's not for regular users... instead, it's software built specifically for sysops, kinda like os x server... so don't worry about it... though i wouldn't mind if this were built directly into the os, as it is windows xp. if you want this on your mac, buy tb2.

The New ANAT?

Actually, OS9 had Apple Network Assistant Toolkit, an administrator app that would allow screensharing and disk management. Alas, it was only really available through educational channels or major sleuthing. Also, it never supported OSX. However, there's been rumor that it's being ported to X, so I wonder if this is it, or at least the first part of it?

If I recall, an ANA administrator license ran near $300, although the client was part of the standard OS9 install. This is NOT expensive, especially when you've got sites on your WAN that would cost airfare, rentalcar and hotel to visit!

This is a great deal

This used to be called Apple Network Assistant and came with Apple Share IP. This looks to be far more robust. As a Mac sys. admin this tool is invaluable. I and many other have been waiting for this tool to be ported over to OS X. As much as I would have like for this to be included with OS X Server, I am more than happy to pay $500 to have this under OS X.

well, this is part of what's got microsoft in hot water, right? they're so obscenely rich that they can undercut all their competitors in pricing, and make themselves look better. meanwhile, smaller manufacturers actually have to charge to recover their expenses.

don't worry... i'm sure microsoft will charge for the upgrades to this feature later on, and cripple windows users who don't buy the upgrade.

still, yeah, i wish it were free. ;-)

New ANAT

Yes, this is the new version of Apple Network Assistant (the old ANAT was Network Assistant and At Ease in a bundle). The feature set for Remote Desktop is virtually identical to Network Assistant 4, except that it runs on Mac OS X (both as manager and client) and there are a couple of features missing (probably couldn't get them implemented for Mac OS X).

As to the other comments:

- you can view and control more than four screens. You can only see four at a time, but (assuming your network bandwidth will allow it) you can be connected to more than four at a time and just rotate through the screens.

- this does a LOT more than Timbuktu: for instance, you can push software to multiple systems at once, you can search multiple system, compare software between stations, get virtually complete system information (RAM, hard drive info, monitor settings, and a lot more) delete from multiple systems at once, verify and repair the hard drives, launch applications, all again on multiple systems at once.

If you want to compare with Netopia products, Apple Remote Desktop is like having Timbuktu and NetOctopus in one application. It is NOT intended as a low-end remote connection tool for home users between only two systems. For an administrator managing multiple Macs, though, the price is well worth it in time savings.

Whoever believes XP gives you this functionality for free did not do your homework. Remote Desktop on WinXP is *only* screen sharing. It does not give you the software distribution, machine profiling, and organization features that the Apple product does. Go to Apple's web page and read up on their product before complaining.

If all you want is screen sharing and are too cheap to buy Timbuktu, download VNC - it's free.

Looks better, does less?

I think the combo of Timbuktu and netOctopus is much more powerful then Remote Desktop, at least judging from the Tech Specs page on Apple's Web site.

For example, netOctopus gathers some 300 or so pieces of information on client systems, while ARD (Apple Remote Desktop) only gathers a couple dozen. Also (and I've used both the old ANAT and netOctopus) the software push feature of netOctopus was really, really well done; it will be hard to beat.

I look forward to trying ARD out and comparing the two.

Everybody always want everything for free.
You can't compare a remote administating suite with a screen sharing software like VNC or Timbuktu. the Apple Remote Desktop is not a toy, and Apple don't target the customer market with that thing. So 500$ for ulimited license is more than a fair price.

People read the small blurb from MacNN, went to the site, saw a picture of 4 screens, didn't read anything and immediately said "I can do remote screens with VNC". True, but that's only one of the many features of this software. That's like going to the iTunes site, seeing a picture of a list of songs and claiming "I can do that already with SimpleText." (well, there are more than a few flaws with that analogy, but you get my point)

Please read up on the software before you start making outrageous claims. Perhaps it's a bigger issue here at MacNN because they don't write a whole "story" on it just a small blurb and leave it up to you to figure out the rest and whether it's important to you...

Don't forget that Timbuktu allows both Mac AND Windows systems to be used either way (admin/client)... Apple's is Mac only (duh), so there are some benefits to using Timbuktu in a cross-platform environment.

*IS* NA for OSX

Remember that the OS9 client for the traditiona NA were *FREE* for all OS9 clients. It was a seperate install, but it was there. You could only get the Admin program when you purchased ASIP server.

This is not for the home user, this is for organizations that have MULTIPLE systems (we have 2500 Macs and about 500 Windows). This system does not have the same functionality as Filewave and NetOctopus. It does not have a client pull technology, systems must be ON to access. I have used NA extensively and for the price, you can not beat the options.

The Admin program is OSX however the clients can be OS 8.1 and up, that covers MORE than the systems that we currently have running (we use 8.6 and up). People using NA on a regular basis have been crying for an OSX version, and this is it.

I for one will be ordering the unlimited version as soon as I get into the office.

RDP - VNC - X11 etc..

1 Apple IS marketing this product for SINGLE user use - "If you�re a professional who spends time on the road"... And for people without VNC or X11 or TB2 -- Apple Remote desktop (vs www.rdesktop.org) may make sense.

2 RDP access is what XP/2KServer etc. provide for "remote admin" or "application mode" terminal services - Mac/Linux users can access RDP via "rdesktop". Citrix metaframe clients using ICA are more platform neutral than RDP clients for WIndows Terminal services. Only the "remote admin" mode of terminal services is bundled w/ XP PRO... 2K SERVER was the earlier entry point for bundled "admin mode". NT4 Terminal Server predates the "free" remote access feature. VNC is not a good solution for Windows systems with Terminal Services enabled.

3 All Apple pricing is per SINGLE admin console.

4 VNC is more about peer desktop sharing. Windows RDP is more about thin clients to WIndows servers. Apple Remote Desktop is more remote admin / control than whiteboard/NetMeeting/Vid conferencing.

5 it will be interesting to see what protocols were used in Apple Remote Desktop - hopefully simple "peer application sharaing" will be possible without VNC.

Timbuktu Scripting

Just my 2 cents. The AppleScripting capabilities compensate for many of the feature differences between other programs. This with the ability to also access PC's, and it is still a very powerful tool. You can use Timbuktu and AS to automate installs, search for software, get versions, system extensions... And with the "Adminstrator" keys, it is verys secure and you can force user settings. Anyone looking for network management, take a look at all of the products mentioned in these posts. They are all great products and I am sure one of them will suit you needs. ARD, Timbuktu, NetOctopus, FileWave, VNC Client/Servers. There is also a newcomer, called OnDuty. First off, anyone who says this should be free doesn't need this software. This is not consumer software and should not be compared to iTunes or iPhoto. In the business/corporate world, ARP has a VERY low unlimited licensing price compared to other similar offerings out there in the market (for Mac and other platforms).

ARD should not be compared with VNC. VNC is a wonderful tool, with only 1 feature - remote input of mouse/keyboard and remote output of display. Yes, ARD can do this, but this is just one of it's smaller feature.

A feature that has so far been overlooked in the comments is that ARD can so software profiling/auditing for all clients on a network. This is comparable to SMS on Windows. In a corporate/business environment, this is very important to keep track of software licensing and checking to see what software/versions users have installed.

For network administrators migrating from Windows to OS X, this now pretty much complete's the tool chest they need to do their job - at a very good price. For network administers migrating from OS 9 to OS X, i can see where it would be a step backwards for Apple. But, uh...hey...it's really cool.

Notice Apple didn't change their homepage to announce this like the iMac or iPhote. But on the ARP homepage, It has distinct info for their two target markets in the ARD menu - "In the Classroom" and "At work". Don't make the Mac community look like idiots when you post here. Know you place!

Okay, to everyone who said that this should be free since it is something "included with Windows XP", you need to take a MUCH closer look at what you're talking about.

Confusing as it is, Windows XP has a feature which, unfortunately, is called "Remote Desktop" which "Allows users to create a virtual session onto their desktop computers using the Microsoft Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)." What is that useful for, Microsoft? "Allows users to access all of their data and applications housed on their desktop computers from another computer running Windows 95 or later that is connected to their machine via a network." (from MS.com)

Cool. Useful, very similar to a VNC solution, but integrated and free. Nice. You may have an argument that this would be something useful for Apple to add to Mac OS X for free as well.

But, OTH, let's look back at Apple's ARD: "Apple Remote Desktop with real-time screen sharing is the ideal desktop management solution for education, businesses, and professionals on the go." Okay, so what does that mean for us, Apple? "ARD enables a teacher to keep an eye on all the computer screens in a classroom or lab, distribute software upgrades, perform group demos, and provide online assistance with real-time text communications for students needing individual attention." with features like "drag-and-drop software copying, so you can copy files from your administrative system to other systems in a snap" and you "can delegate administrative tasks, allowing (for example) teachers or team leaders to assist users and generate reports, while assigning delete/change privileges only to designated support personnel. "

That's just a few of the features here, not a fair comparison to a consumer-grade remote screen showing client if you catch my drift?

it mentions getting work from home but I think that's just pushing it a bit for people who have more money than they know what to do with. OSX is already great for filesharing. I just set my mac to shard files via FTP by hitting 1 checkbox in the sharing pref pane and I can log into my mac from college when I need my work.

It's saved many times in the past

Removal of Obstacle

i'm a sys admin who for the last 4 years has depended on Apple's Network Assist to manage 600 OS9 macs on a LAN.

i'm now pleased as the arrival of ARD marks the removal of the one last major obastacle preventing me from migrating our Macs to X.

AND... the cost is GREAT... works out at less than $1 per seat, with no additional cost when we add more seats.

i think those complaining about the price have no idea of how valuable to a sys admin this product is.

it's not just something you use to take over a buddy's mac & fool around. do you really need or want that built into your OS? if so you have it through terminal anyway.

in fact, ARD will save incalculable amounts of my time & resources.

as an example, it allows me to install or updgrade Adobe Photoshop 7 on 600 machines in 5 minutes without leaving my desk. think about how long tht would take without ARD. 3 days of my time at $800 per day.... and that's just for one task.

this is a necessary product in any network with more than 10 machines at a great price... and that is a no brainer.

Why Apple is going to publish this app is questionable. Timbuktu is a great app from a loyal developper who was among the first to deliver a OSX version of their software. This action might put them out of buissiness.

Where i'm really disapointed that where windows terminal server and other unixes offer the possibility to serve more than one remote desktops. Being a more or less standard feature on unixes/ Xwindows (including Linux)its disapointing to see OSX still doesn't have it.

This might be due to the reason that it would lower Apple hardware sales. Imaging 4 beige 7600 machines logged in to a 1 GHz dual G4 running 4 copies of Photoshop at the same time. The Blue G3 machines could run Photoshop at 1 GHz G4 speed... The 7600's that ar almost obsolete can contiunued to be use at least for another 3 years this way.. Maybe next year all you have to replace is the G4. Otherwise you would have to buy 4 extra G4's..

Killing Timbuktu???

Why would this kill timbuktu when ANA didn't previously? This really is the equivalent product for OSX. All of timbuktu's strong points are still strong points (eg the cross-platform stuff). In fact Apple license portions of the timbuktu code to make Remote Desktop: if the Netopia folks were scared about going out of business they're certainly not showing it.

I bet all the people comparing this to timbuktu or VNC would think that FinalCut Pro is just like iMovie and they would think Apple should give FCP away for free as well!

Give me a break! Its one of if not thee most expensive video editing software out there and I do not see the intended buyers of FCP complaining about the $1000 price tag! Its meant for pro's.

If VNC is so good then why are you complaining that remote desktop should be free? Go get VNC, use it, and be happy :)

this is an invaluable tool that i use everyday. Yes the client comes with os9. it took me forever to find the pw for the damn thing, but you stillc an't do anything without teh admin. And that it even took me forever to find the cd. We use this on over 100 misc apple computers, some teachers use osx now. with the added availability of osx to this. fantasitc, i was reading somewhere that it was going to take a couple more years for this to come out, thank god it didn't take that long.
