Free storage sites struggle for survival

David Snedigar notes that free online storage services may go the same way as free ISPs, many of which have shut down this year. Netdrive.com, one such service, announced yesterday that it will be discontinuing its operations effective December 22. Of course, Mac users can always rely on Apple's iDisk.

    According to this AppleInsider link:

the Network Browser in Mac OS 9.1 supports iDisk - quite handy!

    So Does Mac OS X

Mac OS X will integrate an iDisk in rather seamlessly (when finished).

Apple is going to greate strides to integrate disparate technologies for "storage" into the new Finder with one interface.

    ... and other solutions

iDisk is certainly the most convenent for Mac users. But, if you need crossplatform compatibility, Yahoo Briefcase is works quite nicely. 25Mb of drive space, and it's completely free!!! The services Yahoo offers really surprises me sometimes. Check it out!

    I do not get it.

Why would anyone want to use online storage? It's slow, it's a pain and it's unreliable. And I really do not think you can count on Apple keeping up their slow iDisk service.
Just like anything in life, you get what you *pay* for.

    iDisk

I don't use iDisk for storage, rather for hosting my personal webpages.

    iDisk & Mac Hosting

We were using free services for a while. Then we switched to MacServe.net which uses Apple's iDisk technology. We have 200MB of space and a bunch of other services like FMP hosting for only $500/yr . I think they start at 100/yr and part of that is 50MB .

The big difference from a free service is that we get domain hosting too. With Apple's iDisk and other free places you are always off of their URL and their e-mail name.

What really rocks is being able to update web pages using the disk that shows up on my desktop. They sent me a Mac OS alias file and all I do is double-click it. Way cool! And I think it is cross platform because our Windows clients pick files up from our web server using FTP.

Free gets you started but there are really good services out there for cheap. Sometimes the free service spam ain't worth it.
