FirewireDirect.com is shipping its new UltraBURN DVD-R, a DVD authoring mechanism that burns DVD-R and DVD-RW, as well as CD-R and CD-RW media. It uses the newest generation Pioneer DVR-104 drive which reads DVD titles at 6x, writes DVD-R discs at 2x as well as reads CDs at 24x, writes CD-R at 8x, and writes to CD-RW at 4x. An external FireWire version is $550, while an internal drive is $400. It ships with DVD/CD authoring software (Discribe) as well as a DVD-R disc. The company is also selling Jewel-cases DVD media for $4/disc and in bulk for $2.60/disc (spindle pack of 50).

if they are using the DVR-104, doesn't that have a CD-RW write speed of 8X?

    amazing thing is

regular CDR burners used to cost this much only 3 or so years ago. And a burner like this (basically) used to cost twice this only one year ago.

anyone remember when Jaz disks were cool to use?

    or MO was 120 MB?

    Down, down down

I remember when you had to pay a buck or two for a CD-R disk... just wait, they will get down to around $1 by this time next year (if not lower)

    Back to the future...

    Hi
I've just dropped in from the future. Wow! You guys can only store 5 GB on a disc that size??? Boy, do you have a lot to learn about pan-dimensional, multi-rhomboid lattice storage systems. And only 8 bits per byte? Man, ours go all the way to eleven!

    See you in 10 years!

    Software

Anyone know if this is compatable with iDVD, or is only the Apple Superdrive?

    LaCie - $499

All vendors will be shifting from the DVR-A03/103 to the DVR-A04/104 sometime in March, as the 104/A04 reaches the integrators.

Two main improvements: drive now standard depth, like other CD-R/RW drives (important for internals, and certain cases).

    CD-RW write speed improved.

    ATA-33 interface for improved throughput.

    Lower cost.

By the by, LaCie has had the SuperDrive External; has PC software bundle, Toast Lite, and certified for use with DVD Studio Pro.

DVD SP is compatible with A03/103/A04/104, as the 104 is in the new G4 Macs and iMacs.

Last, no you cannot use iDVD2 with an external drive.

Say what? ATA-33 is the baseline ATA speed, and the A03 already supported ATAPI-5, which can use up to ATA66 speed.

Did you perhaps mean ATA133? If so, I'm a bit surprised, as I hadn't seen any vendors other than Maxtor supporting that new standard in their drives yet.

Yep, that's all! Supports DMA now.
