PC PhoneHome helps recover stolen computers

Mac versions of PC PhoneHome are now available for Mac OS 8/9 and OS X. The software tracks the location of a missing laptop or desktop computer by secretly transmiting an electronic message to an email address of your choice, allowing you to track and locate your computer. A freeware Lite version sends a periodic stealth signal to the registrant's command center with the exact coordinates of the registrant's computer, but can be removed with a format, low-level format or fdisk procedure, while the paid version ($30) cannot be removed from the protected hard drive with a format, low-level format and fdisk procedure.

    Re: All your base

Sorry, pal. You're more than a year late to the "all your base" party.

a program that auto sends an email once a day. from that email they can get isp and eventaully the address of where your mac is at.

    format doesnt remove it?

i guess i'd like to know how thats possible. if you remove the format, how can the OS know about, let alone send an e-mail?

    Ummm...

You could always replace the hard drive to avoid detection.

    yeah,

but the dude who might steel your laptop may not know that you have this program installed. If he steels something he cannot be bright anyway.

    No Mac X version

Unfortunately, there is no Mac OS X version and the OS 9 Pro version is only available on CD. For Windows, of course, you can get it in any flavor, download, angle or version you want. Sounds familiar doesn't it? Sometimes, this Windows--- an inferior platform for almost everything--- gets a little irritating. Sorry for the vent. I just had to say it.

    No Mac OS X version

I meant to say that ther is no Lite version of OS X available. And I have contacted the company to confirm if there is indeed an immediate OS X availability on CD. (Their web site is vague on this and I would not be surprised if the OS X version will not be available immediately.)
