updated 02:30 pm EST, Fri December 8, 2000
Global Village today began shipping the first Mac-compatible 56K/v.92 modem. First announced in August, the device offers support for the new v.92 protocol that allows users to receive data at up to 56Kbps, and send data at up to 48Kbps. Previous v.90 modems were limited to sending data at 33.6Kbps. The modem also offers support for the new v.44 compression standard, which Global Village claims can improve Web browser performance by as much as 100%. ISPs are expected to add v.92 and v.44 support some time next year. The $100 modem is currently only available as a serial port device. A USB version is expected down the road.

You know, this would have been good a year ago for some, but with the availability of high speed connection, true high speed that is, even 56k is out of date now. Ever tried to watch a movie trailer at 56k? Hah!
