Tech news: A "double-free vulnerability" in the zlib compression library affects all Linux variants and some BSD variants (potentially OS X), according to c|net; Red Hat announced G4 processor and AltiVec support for its GNUPro Linux toolchain and cross compiler development tools, allowing the development of more AltiVec-enabled applications; and Microsoft has offered an olive branch to the European Commission, saying it will open up some information kept secret, which was allegedly in violation of European Union law.

    Psyched about RedHat

Hopefully, they'll work hard on optimizing Linux for the G4 so we can see more trustworthy comparisons of PowerPC vs. Pentium performance.

    MS isn't an alleged

offender, it's a convicted corporate felon - at least in the US.

If MS is opening up some information kept secret it is hardly indicative of a new age of cooperation. It just means that had the case gone to trial, MS estimated it would lose and be vilified even further.

The EU is not the US

I assume there's been some pressure on the DOJ in the US simply because MS represents alot for the US economy. I guess the EU doesn't have the same compassion about MS. And any attempt to diminish MS power could be beneficiary for european businesses and administration. I wish they had plans to developp their own standards. Why stick to Windows anyway ? The commission itself spends huge amounts of money on MS products.
