G4 Cube picked as best product of the year

updated 10:20 am EST, Fri December 8, 2000

Business Week has picked Apple's G4 Cube as one of the best products of 2000 in its December 18 issue. "This computer is remarkably small for its size--9.8-by-7.7-7.7 inches, however, it doesn't allow for internal peripherals and the reset button is on the bottom." The list "reflects a range of products that though they may appear simple in design are quite sophisticated in their execution." Other picks include the BMW Z8, Honda Insight, Nikon CoolPix 880, Sony PlayStation 2, and The Sims. [subscription required]

    lame links

It really burns my butt when things are posted here at MACNN and then when you go to the link to learn more, you can't. Why, because you are not a member or subscribed. How about some kind of icon to tell us it is a members only site. We all are busy and don't have time to waste or subscribe to every site out there.

    Small for its size?

"This computer is remarkably small for its size" hmmm does this sound wrong to anyone else?

    Yes, it's wrong...

Yes, "This computer is remarkably small for it's size" is redundant, but hey, it's business week, most of their writers find it hard to make it up to their 500 word minimum limit. Just look at the other products there, the Playstation 2? If you can find one before christmas you'll find the games for it suck, and basically all they have to say about the G4 cube is that it's small and cool looking and can't handle internal peripherals well. (which is wrong) I wish they'd do a bit more research.

    umm..note the subtext

"Other picks include the BMW Z8,
Honda Insight, Nikon CoolPix 880, Sony PlayStation 2, and The Sims. [subscription required]". I made the mistake not reading that first, but now that I see it, it makes me wonder if that statement shouldn't be boldfaced at least.

    Here we go again...

Why is it that everytime some mainstream publication reviews an apple product, all they recieve is criticism (at least in this forum). Come on people, think about it for a second, major magazines recognizing Apple products is a good thing. Even if they do get some of the minor details wrong (and believe me, I am among the first to notice when they do), did you happen to notice that they were PRAISING an Apple product? Am I the only one who remembers when ALL that Apple got was genuinely BAD PRESS?

    Reset button? Why?

Only people who use MacOS or Windoze would complain about
the location of the reset button. The G4 Cube is designed
to run OS-X, so the reset button is hardly used.

Reset and Off buttons are redundant on a Unix
machine, unless it tells the Unix kernel to initiate a
reboot/shutdown. One might as well yank the power cord
and achieve the same effect - disks out of sync, cached
    data lost, config files corrupted.

    Yeah, ok....

So, business week digs the cube. Fitting, that a magazine with such an upperclass title deems the cube such a great product. For common folk, its nothing but an overpriced sharper image product. Good for nothing but yuppie scum bent on impressing people with their materialistic belongings. All show, no go.
