Kensington begins shipping FlyLight

updated 10:00 am EST, Fri December 8, 2000

Kensington today announced that it has begun shipping its FlyLight laptop USB light. The device plugs into a USB port—requiring no software—that powers its "gentle" white LED, which is rated at 100,000 hours of use. Kensington claims the $20 device draws less than 90 seconds of battery power for every hour it's in use.

    Nice to see this.

Why Apple can't see the diffulculty of black keyboard keys, in trying to type (especially if you aren't really a typist) is beyond me. I found the G4 keyboard to be a real pain to use.

    Great idea.

I love this idea. I spent about forty dollars on the best portable halogen book lite available for my FireWire powerbook. It has a small footprint and does the job, but it's a bit cumbersome and difficult to angle right. With the flyLight, I'll be able to get the perfect angle splashing light on my keyboard, and still be able to work in the low ambient light conditions I prefer.

Wonderful idea with a very small battery hit. I'm buying two.

    Key colour doesn't matte

To the first poster, I have an iBook with white keys - you can't see them in the dark very well either. Kudos to the Kensington!

    Typing by "seeing"?

Hmm, I'm one of those people who can pretty much type with my eyes closed once I place my fingers on "asdf" and "jkl;". The light emitted from my PB's LCD was enough for me to locate those keys when the electricity went out. To me, I don't see much usefulness in this product.

    USB for power only?

Interesting how someone has seen the USB as a source of power and not a place to plug in a peripheral - so what next? - backup power for MP3 players, cell phones - maybe even jump leads for your car on cold mornings, all you need to do is connect two pieces of 300 amp flexible able into a USB plug.

    USB as power source

I bought the $7 Benwin USB speakers from Outpost.com for my iBook. Guess what? It's not a true USB speaker - it uses the USB port for power only and connects to the audio port for sound.

It's still smaller & more convenient than most other speakers and has the advantage of not requiring another AC adapter.

    You'd need FireWire...

...to jump start a car. ;-)

Seriously, that's a good point. I would love to see cell-phone and PDA cables that leech off my PowerBook's battery source.

    great idea!

I use my PB when I DJ at parties and clubs, and the flylight is perfect in the dim lighting at the clubs.
