Photosharing software: WinXP or Apple?

David Pogue of The New York Times writes "That P in PC Now Stands for Picture," where he discusses the photo software options from Microsoft and Apple: "And in terms of simplicity and artistry, Microsoft still can't match Apple: the XP slide show lacks crossfades or music, you cannot export a slide show as a stand-alone file for distribution, as iPhoto can, and posting your pictures on the Web involves a typically Microsoftian snarl of dialogue boxes (11 of them)." duhh...

was there ever any doubt? come on... Apple's FREE iPhoto kicks WinXP's doors in. Who didn't see that one coming? I could train a monkey to code a graphical UI... but he would end up working in Redmond and not in Cupertino...

    Unsurprising

Not that I am doubting the truth of this article, but isn't it a bit silly to get a Macintosh veteran like David Pogue to do Wintel/Macintosh comparisons?

You might as well get Mr Jobs to do it.

    yet another

Maybe it's just me but are there not an innumerable amount of Apple/Win comparisons in the media lately? What's to compare, Apple rules hands down.

    Oh, please.

I certainly can have music slideshow in XP. Fire up WinAmp or Sonique and start slide show. Heh!

Okay, okay, so it's not quite the same. Elegance is still largely a foreign concept on this side of the fence. :P

    OS vs Apps

Last year, when introducing the digital hub concept, SJ espoused the idea of specialized "finders" which would be media dependent. Finder for data files, iTunes for music, iPhoto for pictures, etc.

Interesting that Microsoft, while trying to be a digital hub, is taking the exact opposite approach. Windows/IE for everything. Advantage: same interface for everything. Disadvantage: no flexibility, everything has to be shoe-horned into one framework.

It will be interesting to see which philosophy wins out. To make an analogy, it's a little bit like kitchen knives. Sure, I could use a 6" chef's knife for everything, and it would do a mediocre job. But instead I have 6", 8", 10" chef's knives, a boning knife, a paring knife, etc. Specialized tools for specialized situations. Apple's philosophy should win if not crushed by the 800lb gorilla from Redmond.

    *yawn*

these articles are absolutely stupid. doesn't david pogue or anyone else for that matter have anything else better to write about then these worthless showdowns? can't believe people get paid writing this sort of stuff that people have known for a long time.

    which "people" know?

These articles aren't being written for the choir, you know... these articles are going up in MAJOR publications to inform the unwashed cunsomer masses that there *is* an option to the drek that's rammed down their throats by M$.

Yes, it would be nice to have someone not widely recognized in the Mac world writing this kind of stuff... but then again, they're only recognized by us Mac geeks :) Nothing wrong with some slanted writing to the Mac's benefit for once...

Apple can't have enough good press when it comes to these comparisons. Frankly, all but the hord core are at least giving Apple some credit and perhaps taking a second look at our beloved platform. Apple's bells and whistles are wonderful and given it's UNIX core, Apple's got a real shot at taken back some much needed market share.

    Hmmm,

Ok i have notice too the amount of Mac/win comparisions, could this be a move by apple? Are they not going release "everything is easier on a mac" commercials? or is the slogan too long? Are they going to only reviews to push the mac?

I think Apple is doing a good job with the media.

I doubt web masters and folks maintaining databases for their company are so keen on how darn near every user is now needlessly double clicking links on web pages because MS bolted the browser on their file management program (as we all now to be the clearest tactic for them to doom Netscape). So now folks used to double clicking to open files are excessively pounding online resources and skewing the # hits, etc...
