OpenOSX is shipping its $30 XFree 1.1 CD, which will install "XFree 4.2.0 and Xdarwin 1.1 configured with the OroborOSX window manager in less then 5 minutes by simply double-clicking the OpenOSX package icon." XFree is a native implementation of the X-Window library that is the "UNIX" standard for graphical user interfaces; it offers access to many open-source and commercial Applications that utilize X-Windows.

    Why spend the $$$?

These are all available as free downloads with double-clickable installers. Why spend $30?

$30 for out of date versi

Neat. $30 gets you an out of date set of installers in a package that is hard to upgrade and without access to a bunch of other useful stuff.

Use Fink (fink.sourceforge.net) instead-- you get up to date installers, access to hundreds of standard unix and X packages, and its free.

OpenOSX is based on Fink, not that you can easily tell from their docs.

    Yeah, but...

For the certified moron like me, this would be helpful. I have been VERY unsucessful with running this stuff under OS X. Its not my fault I don't have CLI experience.
    Heh.

    goto versiontracker

go to versiontracker.com/macosx and search for xfree86. download the 53mb stuffit file. unstuff and install. this will install x windows in a single package installation and will also give you the choice to run it rootless (share desktop with regular os x apps) or dedicated (takeover complete desktop, use a hotkey to switch back to aqua/os x).

    it's freeware too.

    no cli experience needed

btw, with the versiontracker link, this install is a standard os x installer and doesn't require command line knowledge for installation.

    Huh?

Now tell me why a total "CLI moron" like yourself needs to install XFree86?
