DivXNetworks has released DivX 5.0 suite of video technologies for creating, production and distribution of DVD-quality digital video. Currently, only available as an alpha version for the Mac, Divix 5.0 alpha has no encoding tools, but sports playback compatibility with all versions of DivX video content; includes a first pass at a fix for the MP3 audio QuickTime bug, which prevented MP3 audio from playing properly in AVI files; improved encoding and decoding performance with optimizations for G3 processors; and the ability to decode MPEG-4 Simple Profile, MPEG-4 Advanced Simple Profile, and H.263 video (all levels). It is free for personal use.

    Wee!

Thank god. I'm so glad to see these codecs finally making it to MacOS. Moreover, they seem to work quite well

    Hooray!

DivX 4.11 made it to mac too. This seems to work about the same since they can't seem to get around the problems Quicktime 5 has with playing mp3 and video at the same time. Hopefully Quicktime 6 will be out soon and we'll have an ideal DivX player. It's great that they're supporting the mac so well.

    Too bad...

it's soooo much slower than ffmpeg's divx decoder (comes with DivOSX & EasyDiVX).

Hopefully they'll speed it up soon...

    Re: Horray!

Your statement, "the problems QT 5 has playing mp3 and vidoe at the same time," is VERY misleading. I have a megs of QT .mov files with mp3 audio combined with many different types of video codecs - including 3ivx - and they play just fine. The blame should not be directed at QT - they don't write the codecs nor do they have anything to do with AVI.

So, what can we use for encoding in Divx?

    Sucks

MacOSX is supposed to be the premium platform for digital content creation, meanwhile we get the frickin VIEWER after everybody and years after the format gained popularity on windoze we still don't even have an encoder... Am I the only one to see something very wrong with this picture?

    At Least

It's a step in the right direction. With releases past, the Mac version would come out months after the Windows version, if at all. With DivX 5, we have a simultaneous release of viewers. As Apple converges on MPEG-4 with Quicktime 6, maybe we'll see even better treatment of the Mac from the DivX community.

    Ooookay...

Yeah, it's ripped off MPEG-4, but who cares? This is as close as we're gonna get for a while.
