Palm has unveiled two color handhelds: the Palm m130 and m515, which both feature Palm's Expansion Card Slot for use with SD Card and MultiMediaCard media and the Palm Universal Connector for attaching add-on modules, such as a collapsible keyboards and modems. The entry-level Palm m130 includes a rechargeable battery, 8MB of memory, a removable flip-cover to protect the screen, and optional color faceplates, while the m515 has 16MB of memory and a business software productivity package. They are immediately available worldwide for $280 and $400, respectively.

    $400?!?!?!?

Umm $400 for a SMALL color screen and only 16 megs ram?!?! COME ON. I'm no fan at ALL of Microsoft, but when I saw that Pocket Mac was finally finished with their app for synching the iPaq with the Mac, (with the pro version coming very soon to sync with Entourage) I bought an iPaq. This weekend I grabbed an iPaq 3765 at my local Circuit City for $399 plus $25 mail in rebate. It has a much larger, higher resolution color screen plus 64 megs of ram! And I hate to admit this, but Pocket PC 2002 is a sweet OS for handhelds. Many people think that the reason Apple hasn't released a hand held is because the market is satuated. But I truly truly believe that if Apple could make an OS X based handheld (hey if MS did it, Apple can do it that much better) then that PDA would sell hudreds of thousands. In other words, if MS and Compaq can make a very very nice handheld like this, then Apple should be able to blow that (AND Palm, Handspring, Sony) out of the water.

    Apple PDA

I truely beleive that Apple could make a better PDA. What I want is the 5Gb Hard Drive in the iPod in a PDA. I don't need removable media, if I had 5Gb of Storage. I guess right now that PDA would be $1000 or more. Oh well my Sony Clie 615 will have to do for now.

    Compelling?

    Not really.

What can these new handhelds do that my Palm III cannot? Not a whole heck of a lot. Why should i upgrade?

Palm, you need to figure out your product strategy really quick. You have too many models and none of them are going to convince people like me to upgrade. And figure out a rational naming/numbering scheme, too.

Apple already made a killer handheld back in 1996/97. I still have my doubts that they'll ever go back to the handheld market... others are only now starting to exceed the Newton's capabilities. Handhelds are a risky market to get into. They're low-margin devices that people seem very fickle about, and i'm sure Apple is hesitant to invest serious R&D money in something that risky.

    Just another example...

of Palm's total lack of innovation. These models are only minor upgrades from their previous models. The M130 is just the M125 with a color screen. And the M515 is nothing but the M505 with a "slightly" better color screen and 8MB's more RAM. Otherwise, there is extremely little that is compelling or new about these units than what they've been selling for almost a year now. What is it with Palm these days?? They're in the worst slump I've ever seen a company be in. They need to wake up soon or they'll be out of business before long!

    And let's not forget...

the SONY ClieT615C which, I believe, is giving Palm a run for it's money. Why on earth would I want to upgrade from my m500 to the m515? - I just don't get Palm any more, in more sense than one.

    re: And let's not forget

You might want to get a Palm instead of a CLIÉ because Palm offers Mac support and Sony doesn't - at least not officially.

One of the few reasons why I'm still using a Palm handheld rather than a Sony or Compaq is because Palm offers real Mac support. (I don't entirely trust third-party syncing software.)

And for those of you who say that Palm has too many models to choose from, you're wrong. There are six (m105, m125, m130, m500, m515 i705). This is no more confusing than Apple's six lines of computers (iMac, iMac G3, Power Mac G4, Macintosh Server G4, iBook, PowerBook G4) and seventeen total models.

Whether or not the new models are compelling is another story.

    Palm is Still #1

Palm Devices still make up the majority of PDA being sold. I am a fan of keeping it simple. I do NOT need to run Word on a PDA. But the information I need on the road is there, and now that FileMaker runs on it it is awesome for taking computer inventory.
