Apple has released DVD Player v3.1 via the Apple Software Update application in Mac OS X. The DVD software update adds features for DVD authoring, including the ability to select and play the contents of a 'VIDEO_TS' folder from a local volume as well as AppleScript support for selection and playback of DVD content and a 'wide' info window layout, bug fixes, and stability enhancements.

    Finally

This will shut up those DVD content developers that don't provide their special features for the Mac because Apple didn't provide them with an API to control the DVD player.

    Woo!

    Ripping DVDs?

So can we copy that video folder onto our HD to easily and quickly rip a DVD?

Then copy it onto a data DVD, to easily and quickly archive it? (for personal use only of course)...

Then easily and quickly copy it with disk burner, as you can't have too many backups?

    :)

    Good luck...

Most DVD movies are dual-layer where blank DVD-Rs are single layer.

I believe this feature is geared towards those creating DVDs - does this mean DVD Studio Pro for MacOS X is coming soon?

What's a wide info window? Was the previous one too narrow?

Re: Hate to be a complain

VCDs use MPEG-1, while a DVD Player users MPEG-2. There is some overlap, but it's usually PC players that combine them.

QuickTime can play VCDs, or at least it used to a few years ago when I actually used them. Just open the .DAT file or something with QT Player.

But really, *WHO CARES* about VCDs anymore? Especially with DVD having much higher quality / scene access / extra features and appearing at a rate of 1000 per month.

Even the pirate market is switching to DVD "Silvers"...

For home made video discs, you can make DVDs now for less than a $400 purchase (off the shelf DVD-R drive installed in a PowerMac) or even just get a new flat-panel G4 iMac.

    Re: VCD sux

Many people watch VCDs and SVCDs. Just check out www.vcdquality.com to see what I mean. It's nice to have a DVD quality LOTR less than a month after it's theatrical release. Now if only DVD Player would support SVCDs until QT 6 finally gets released.
