G4 tower gets good press in AP review

Associated Press writer Matthew Fordahl puts the PowerMac G4 in the spotlight with praise for the machine's feature set and case design in his latest review. "The Power Mac G4s look like a traditional PC tower on style steroids." Fordahl also calls the latch-based case design with well-laid-out innards "eloquent."

    Sigh...

Overall good review, then as a parting shot he complains about the lack of ports on the front of the G4, saying it's a pain to plug in the iPod cable.

Why not just leave the cable plugged into the back of the G4, so one end sits on top of the machine for easy access? I've been doing that for years with SCSI cables, and FireWire is hot-swappable so it should be no problem at all.

    Damn...

"That's old news to anyone who follows Intel-based PCs, which now run at speeds of 2.2 GHz."

I hate that, comparing Apples with ... grow up, please!!!

    5.25 in bays

The major thing stopping me from getting a new PowerMac is the anachronistic presence of the second 3.5 in. bay intended for a ZIP drive.

Who the h*** wants a ZIP drive these days? Some people might, but I certainly don't and would much rather have the option of a second CD drive to take the load off the DVD-R superdrive.

If you're listening, Apple, that's my dealbreaker:

I will not buy a new tower until there are at least two 5.25 inch bays.

That's not a Mac-like solution. Some higher-end PCs have USB and even FireWire ports in the front of the machine, some put them behind a little door so as to not mar the aesthetics of the case. If Apple did that, we'd brag. After all, front panel AV inputs now appear on all recent VCRs for a reason.
