Describe 2.0: Java utility for Flash files

updated 09:40 am EST, Fri March 1, 2002

", 0, 0);

Describe 2.0, now completely re-written in Java 2, adds Flash 5 support to the utility that allows "developers and the curious to browse the contents of Flash files - examining the fields in each of the tags to see how the Flash file specification is put into practice." It can also browse files containing 'compiled' ActionScript to view the byte-codes executed by the Flash player. It is freeware.

    Ridiculous

    This is a real bulls**t product. There's a checkbox when exporting your finished movie that reads, "Protect from Import."

    Kinda useless when chumps the world over are stealing your work. This is bigger than HTML, by the way, so don't use the "View Source" argument.

    You can find out just as much about a cocoa-written app, by looking at the nib files (GUI definitions) and using tools that give information about object instances at run-time. What's so scary about that?

    Describe only allows you browse the contents of a Flash file. It does not allow you to edit the file. Describe will show whether the file contains a Protect tag but trying to load the file into the Flash authoring tool will tell you same thing.

    There are a few tools/scripts out there to diable the Protect tag - Describe is not one of them.

    Macromedia publishes the Flash file format so writing a script to break the protection is trivial.

    You should lobby Macromedia for stronger protection such as encryptrion.
