BenaTong has introduced PowerGuardian, a $20 application for OS X that monitors a connected UPS (uninteruptable power supply) and performs a safe system shutdown (saving open files) as well as optionally allows for shutdowns to be based on remaining battery capacity (if supported by the UPS).
