Forums: effort to fix OS X PPP hang bug

updated 05:25 pm EST, Sat February 23, 2002

", 0, 0);

Two threads in our reader forums detail a possible fix for the "PPP hang bug" that has plagued Mac OS X users with dialup access to the internet since the operating system's release. The threads refer to a bug in Mac OS X where users trying to dialup to the internet via PPP through the Internet Connect application used to experience a complete system lockup lasting several minutes. Although the patched kernel extension is not an official Apple release, it is expected that it will be the basis of a finalized fix for the issue in a future release of Mac OS X, and several users have reported success after installation. (Another thread provides some background information to the issue and solution.) [updated]

    Que?

    Please MacNN. If a good fix is released you should indeed link to it. But linking to one of your forum's most confusing and unfocused threads with hundreds of irrelevant messages... Not only does it make your forum look non-penetrable, it also gives me the impression that you cannot compile information before you pass it on to us readers.

    Can anyone describe the "Internet hang bug" fix?

    Re: Que?

    Thread seemed fine to me...

    The "PPP hang bug" thing is when the system hangs on trying to connect to the internet via PPP dialup. It's been around for a long time, and there's been some progress fixing it (finally), that's all.

    The majority of the information in the threads linked to seemed compiled just fine to me, heh.

    Anyway, that's not the point. PPP hang bug fix! Woohoo! :)

    never had that problem

    I've been using OS X for months, and I've never had a system hang for several minutes when connecting with PPP. I did have problems with it connecting but not receiving any data... but those were fixed by applying the same PPP settings in OS 9 and OS X and restarting, then creating a new PPP preference in the System Preferences.

    Bug is not just in PPP

    The bug is not just with PPP, it occurs with any application that tries to open a serial port (spinning rainbow for several minutes, system unresponsive). It happens in the Mac OS X version of SoftTTY (a TDD/TTY emulator for the Macintosh). It would be great if this bug is fixed soon.
