New Apple-store coming to Dublin

updated 09:45 am EST, Fri February 22, 2002

MacNN reader Cormac Shaw writes about an iMac review in the Technology in Business section of today's (Friday) edition of The Irish Times, which notes the opening a new Apple-only store on Kildare Street, Dublin tomorrow:

In fact, the Irish launch of the new iMac is being held tomorrow (Saturday) at the store which is being referred to as an "AppleStore" by the company themselves. Compustore also has an online store which now has a prominent Apple section:

Compustore is Ireland's largest retail computer chain and has to now been a PC-only environment. That they are opening a Mac-centric retail store in central Dublin (around the corner from their main city-centre store), together with last year's opening by Apple of an Irish online AppleStore, is very positive for Mac users in Ireland where Apple's market share, I believe, is less than 2% and where we've generally had to deal with small, hard-to-find, poorly stocked and overpriced resellers.

    not an Apple Store

This is not an Apple Store (ie owned by Apple)! The headline is a little misleading.

    Apple Store - IRELAND.

    And about time too!

This is great news for all Apple punters and potential customers alike,in the South of Ireland. But what about those faithful Apple users in the North of Ireland?

Can we have an Apple Store in Belfast Mr Jobs, please.

For to long we in The North of this lovely island have had to put up with a very monopolistic PC environment.

For example finding a Bank which provides internet service for Apple users, is fraught and almost impossible... I know of only one in N.I.

Here everone seems to think that Microsoft won the battle when we all know to the contrary, i.e. see latest news on uptake of new iMACs.

It's time to show people in the north an alternative computer experience to that on a PC.Where they will find out just how easy it is to operate, create and most of all enjoy their "valuable time" on a computer.

And, if Steve is looking for anyone to run the shop...I'm available at the drop of a hat. Or is that a Compaq, I see on the floor!

    Charles.

    wooHoo

You do know that we're already lobbying Apple to get them to convince a reseller to open a store in the North? Or...if you were receiving our weekly bulletin you'd know that :)

    NYC

Is it my imagination, or did NYC suddenly become an insignificant market?

    RE Ireland?

"Hope Apple has bullet-proof and bomb-proof stores."

I've as good a sense of humour as the next guy but these "jokes" wear just a bit thin. It is a bit like me saying....

    USA?

Hope Apple has some plane proof stores.

Not quite so funny eh? Good to remember that some people have lost loved ones in our conflict also.

But on to the topic. Northern Ireland used to be served by dedicated and committed Apple re-sellers. I know I was there (CEM). It needs a good business model and Matt from the Northern Ireland Mac User group is exactly right. We are lobbying and all local Mac users should become a part of NIMUG and read the upcoming article I intend to write (Half written Matt!!!) on this very issue.

Letting Apple know about this sort of stuff would help and if you join us on our crusade we'll tell you EXACTLY WHO at Apple you might just be able to contact.

Fear not. Apple will be opening an Apple Store in Manhatten. Just check out their Job Listings under the Retail section of their website.

    Re: not an Apple Store

I walked past it a few days ago, but all the windows were filled with posters so i couldn't see in. I believe that it is owned/run by compustore as it has Compustore's Applecenter on some of the posters. It is quite small, i'll pop in on monday and take a look :)
