Reader: Trash X won't work under OS X 10.1.3

MacNN reader Harry Zink has noted that Trash X does not work with Mac OS X 10.1.3.

Adding to the list of issues with OS X 10.1.3, it seems that Apple's latest update has miraculously managed to break Trash X (the nifty utility that allows you to place the Trash Can back where it belongs - on the Desktop).

Now, trying to throw stuff away via Trash X yields: "This application cannot run on this system"

    It belongs on the Dock

Nothing belongs on the Desktop. The Desktop is covered up with stuff all the time. Why the heck would you put the trash under a bunch of windows, documents, applications? It belongs on the Dock where you can access it any time you want.

    well...

there's no reason that a third party shouldn't be able to provide this as an option for users who care enough to seek out such a utitily and download it.

if apple is deliberately disabling applications such as this, then that is a very anti-developer stance and that's bad for mac os x.

apple should provide guidelines for application developers to follow, but it shouldn't police them or make it difficult for third parties to do things that apple doesn't agree with.

remember when microsoft made it very difficult for PC users to use quicktime on windows? this tactic is not very different.

    Oh please...

If you think that there is some vast Apple conspiracy to put the trash can back in the dock, then that's just stupid.

Apple can't be responsible for making sure that every 3rd party hack works after an update. If they did, we'd still be running system 6.

    Good

I think it's great that the usless app doesn't work anymore, maybe if the app had the smarts to remove the trash from the dock and put it on the desktop I would be interested, but why mess with it in the first place? The only things that belong on the desktop are removable media icons and connected servers.

    No Conspiracy...

There is no conspiracy on Apple's part to break Trash X. Trash X is designed to break when Apple updates OS X. As OS X has evolved, many things within it have changed. Since Trash X has the capability to shred files beyond recognition or recovery, I prefer to make sure the program works properly under each OS update. This policy helps eliminate surprises.

Very admirable.. not wanting to accidently mess with user's files. Most developers wouldn't care. However, if this dialog appears by design whenever the OS version updates, you might want to change the text to something a little more descriptive...
