Mac OS X 1.0 in February, says ZDnet

A ZDnet article speculates that Mac OS X 1.0 will be released at a special Apple event on February 24. ZDnet sources also disclosed that the formal shipping announcement would come at Macworld San Francisco. February 24 is six weeks after Macworld San Francisco, and two weeks after Macworld Tokyo.

    Appropos title

    Anybody notice the irony that Mac OS "Ten" will be coming out 10 years after apple started work on their next gen OS (I'm including all the R&D and failed attempts, not just the latest go round). Sort of like WIn 95 being what seemed like the 95th version of windows.

    I hate it when it's referred to as OSX 1.0. That's pronouncing it "Mac OS ten one point 0". It's should be just "OS ten point 0".
    But how you write that in roman numerals.... I'm not sure.

    Yeah Right..

    I doubt that Mac OS X 1.0 is the official product name, nor have I read any mention of that. Besides the fact that it doesn't make sense numerically, it sounds stupid.

    Mac OS X v1.0 = Mac OS v10.0 v1.0 (yeah, right)
    Mac OS X = Mac OS v10.0 (much nicer, therefore..)
    Mac OS XI = Mac OS v11.0 (although this looks stupid)

    "MacOS 10" looks cool. :) As hip as it is to read "Mac OS X" (I guess), it dones't lend itself to product naming very well down the line.

    As far as release date, I'd believe end of February a lot more then January at MWSF. If anyone here has the public beta, you'll notice that it _expires_ in April (or May, I don't have my system booted into OS X right now, sorry).

    Now, Apple doesn't want it's beta OS being used _after_ the full version is released (why you'd want to use it, I dunno, but hey, people are strange sometimes), but wants enough overlap (a month or so) of usable beta time so that people who have installed and are using the beta can upgrade to OS X full without being in a rush.

    I mean, if they release it the same day the beta expires, that's just cruel. Going back to Mac OS 9 would be a scary thing after months of getting used to a preemptive multitasking Mac OS, whatever minor bugs are in it, even if it's only for a couple days while I wait for OS X to arrive at my local retailer.

    (OSX) v1.0

    The name of the product is Mac OS X, it's just marketing which gives it a number which just happens to follow the versioning of OS9. X is not the version number, 1.0 is. Having an OS with a number in the name is no more contrived than having the hardware it runs on called "Power" Macintosh (especially in light of the hardware offerings). Eventually, when OSX is dominant on Macs, people will just refer to what they're using by the version, such as 1.5 or 2, much like they refer to the hardware as simply "G4."

    Function doesn't follow form, this is Apple. The OS name has a number in it, & starts with v1.0.

    Don't they usually have their Apple Events on a Thursday, after the stock market closes? That gives them one more day of good trading for the week, allowing them to gauge investor reaction to whatever announcement they made. I could be wrong, but Saturday seems like a really odd day for a major product launch.
