    yes, we do

Yep, some of us poorer types do. People who don't need the advantages Quark (or Indesign) offer aren't likely to spend $700 (or whatever) just to say that we use Quark. This is especially true at smaller colleges.

On a side note, as a yearbook person here at my college, our publishing company (Taylor) charges more to publish pages built in Quark or inDesign. Pagemaker 6.5 is just fine for me, thanks. 7.0 doesn't offer enough new features to merit the upgrade.

(but I do love the headline - "countless bugs"? Was it that bad?)

    Installer FAILS !

I've tried repeatedly to run this 7.01 updater. Each time the installer either 'quits unexpectedly' or fails during the PageMaker 7.0 program file update.

YES, extensions were off, and yes PageMaekr 7.0 is installed on the Mac.

    Pay extra for Quark files

If you're serious about having to pay extra for Quark output, you need to get out of the sticks and find a real printer. InDesign, I can understand. But any printer who thinks he's making money on PageMaker output is just a hack that needs to be fired.

    re: Real Printer

Actually, we use Taylor Publishing for the yearbook. Not exactly a no name publisher in the yearbook industry. They are either the #1 or #2 (I've forgotten which) publisher for those books (but they can be arrogant morons at times, and have been known to really s**** things up).

Anyway, the real problem is that Quark (the software, not the printing) costs so much, and no one else on campus uses it. PM has been standard at my college for years, and they will only make the transition if there is no OS X version produced. Switching to Quark would cost tens of thousands of dollars, even with the educational discounts we get. I think the school must have gotten a deal on Pagemaker at some time, as they damn near give it away for free to publications.

fwiw, I used Quark when I interned for a commercial publication, and do think it is better than PM. But what can I do? I use what is most efficient, and on a pagemaker campus, that is pagemaker.

    Prepare to Transition

...to QuarkXPress or InDesign. There will never be a Mac OS X version of PageMaker. The code is big and old, which explains why even minor updates take a long time. Carbonization would take forever and would require significant help from Apple. Not worth the effort.

Quark has the same problem. However, unlike PageMaker, QuarkXPress is important enough to be Carbonized.

    Statements

Would user jim_stone care to explain this statement:

"But any printer who thinks he's making money on PageMaker output is just a hack that needs to be fired."

    Thanks in advance Mr. Stone.

    File Not Found

I have tried to install this upgrade and get the following "File not found" error. I hope they fix this ASAP.

    Explain attack on PM?

Sure, I'll take that on. Quark's the standard, guys. It didn't become that way because "I say so," but because it offers superior control of page elements that lets a professional user get the desired output, done right the first time. It's not about user interface at all, but the time and money saved or wasted when outputting film.

PageMaker got it's nicknames "RageMaker" and "PageWaster" because it just wasn't as good as Quark when it came to creating and changing documents and producing film for professional publishing. To make matters worse, Adobe has targeted the product at business (i.e., graphically untrained) users, so now the unskilled are stuck using the poorer tool.

For a professional printer to charge more to output Quark files tells me that he either A) wants to serve the lowest of the low end printing market (I had a guy refuse film once, he was only set up to shoot from lasers) or B) that he hasn't got the technical expertise to utilize the industry standard page layout program.
Look at the help wanted ads. Very few in this industry want people with Pagemaker experience. It's not as relevant. It's an old program that needs to be retired because it is inefficient and less capable.
