Reader: fix for Microtech Zio! drivers

Jonah Petri writes about a fix for the Microtech Zio! Smartmeida compatibility issue with OS X 10.1.3 noted here late yesterday:

"I found a fix for the incompatibility between the new Zio Smartmedia readers and OS X 10.1.3. There is an extension (in /System/Library/Extensions/) called "eUSB SmartMedia10.1.2.kext", which, if removed, will enable the use of the Zio SmartMedia reader under OS X 10.1.3. (restart required, of course) In order to remove it, you can either log in as the root user, or use the terminal (if you're comfortable there). There are instructions from apple about enabling the root user in the applecare knowledge base under article #106290."

    It works

I just finished updating to 10.1.3 -- I had removed the referenced extension before starting the update. After the update, when I inserted my ZiO! and a SmartMedia card from my Olympus D460Z, it mounted on the Desktop and iPhoto launched. Thanks to all who reported this fix!

If only Olympus could get their USB reader to work with the latest OSX builds....

    Driver Support in General

I don't know, but I kinda think that drivers for OS X has been really poor in general. I'm still waiting for deskjet 800 ethertalk drivers (almost two months after a HP support guy told me it would only be "a few weeks"). From all the complaints I've seen, I can only guess that XP support has been priority number one for many companies, and they have under-staffed their mac driver development.

    Smartmedia card

If any of these fixes would actually work for me, that would be nice. I removed that part that you all mentioned here. Still does not work. If anyone has anything that I might try, would you please email me at larryolson@comcast.net. Could you also label the title SMARTMEDIA so I will be able to see it right away. I get a lot of email, and I would sure not like to miss this one. Thank you.

    Still wont work.

I have tried removing all the drivers, using the old driver, and using the new driver. I can not seem to get the Zio SmartMedia Driver to work and my disk to mount at all.

    Smartmedia reader

Well for what it is worth, my SmartMedia card now works in OSX and even IPhoto loads immediately after the card comes up. My trick if any was to install the SmartMedia software and then backwards of what the directions say, I deleted the appropriate file without logging into the root and then rebooted. The I logged into the root and then deleted the trash. Guess what?????? It came up just like it is supposed to. Well those who tried that trick, give it a try. Like me you had and have nothing to lose.

    no restart

Actually, restarts are not needed "of course". Kernel extensions can be dynamically unloaded via the kextunload command in the terminal.

    True...

...but I didn't want to have non-terminal-types having to mess about there... Those (like you) who were in the know would simply use kextunload. :-)

    USB Cameramate fix

For my USB Cameramate, I tried removing the "eUSB SmartMedia10.1.2.kext" file from the "/System/Library/Extensions" folder and rebooted, but the card would not work. I tried reinstalling, then performing this fix again (just to be sure), but with no luck. Finally, I logged in as "root", removed the "eUSB SmartMedia10.1.2.kext" file (again), and opened a terminal session. I used the following commands, in this order (from the "/System/Library/Extensions" directory)

    1. kextunload "eUSB SmartMedia10.1.2.kext"
    2. kextunload "eUSB SmartMedia.kext"
    3. kextload "eUSB SmartMedia.kext"

You'll notice that when performing step #2, you'll see the OS state that the extension was successfully unbinded. Once I did this, it works without any problems, reboot after reboot. I trashed the "eUSB SmartMedia10.1.2.kext" file. Also, be sure the permissions on the driver allow everyone "Read Only".

I'm on an 867 MHz Quicksilver, Mac OS X 10.1.3.

    Hope this helps.

    SmartMedia

    I have a 500MHz iMac DV SE, running OS X 10.1.5.
There is no extension labeled eUSBSmartMediaxxx.kext.
My Zio SmartMedia reader will not load.
    Any suggestions?
