"Maine can avoid the problems Henrico County, Virginia, suffered through intensive teacher training, policies that clearly spell out rules and expectations for students, and constant reminders that Internet searches and e-mail usage are being monitored," Superintendent Matthew Oliver wrote in his three-page paper distributed last week to some legislators and the media by the Department of Education.

They let you graduate the 6th grade, let alone high school, with that writing skill? ;)

    Problems in Henricho?

Oh come on! What's so bad about students using the Macs to download pornography? As if the people (that say they're worried) didn't do activities relative to that at that age.

Hey, this is the US, home of the "Hey, he got 6 out of 7 letters correct, which is 85%. He passes." schools.

And lets not forget the wonderful world of the grading curve! "OK, so I only got 40% of the answers right on my test, but everyone else knew less than I did, so I get an A!!!".

    Ain't Heigh skool grand!

    Portable lab problems

Training and proper setup is the key. I have a teacher friend using one of the iBook portable labs and it has been a bit of a mess getting it all working. 30 iBooks through one Airport connection seems a recipie for disaster. I think that they are even trying to NetBoot them. Kids punching keys because nothing is happening. The non-techies lose faith in the technology pretty quickly.
