BSD desktop share triples that of Linux

According to 'published reports,' Ernest Prabhakar of Apple Computer informed attendees at the USENIX BSD Conference earlier this week that BSD (upon which Mac OS X is based) is now "three times more popular" than Linux on desktop computers. Because Linux' primary strengths are in server-related applications and uses, columnist Kelly McNeill of osOpinion says bragging about BSD's desktop share over Linux "might be likened to an individual bragging that he is the fastest downhill skier in all of Egypt."

I thought you could actually install Mac OS X without the BSD shell stuff. Not that anyone does, it's just not everyone uses the shell, whereas just about every Linux user has to.
Mac OS X sits on top of the Mach 3 kernel. Surely, BSD is in the same layer as Carbon, Cocoa, Quartz, etc.
Or have I got it wrong?
Anyway, I'd much rather use Mac OS X than Linux. They even ripped off their penguin mascot from the QuickTime ice floe - seems Windows wasn't the only OS to rip off Apple.
