Washington Post praises iMac in Sunday review

updated 06:40 pm EST, Sun February 17, 2002

The latest edition of the Washington Post's "Fast Forward" tech column takes a flattering look at Apple's new iMac desktop computer: "Most computers might as well have descended from the boxes they were shipped in. Apple's new iMac looks more like something evolved from R2-D2," says Technology columnist Rob Pegoraro "And the iMac's screen-on-a-stalk is staggeringly useful -- I would call it "obvious," except hardly any other manufacturers offer anything like it."

    Niche player

We are constantly reminded, day after day by the wintel community, that Apple is an irrelevant niche player with a paltry 3% of the pc market. Why then does the news media continue to lavish attention, both good and bad, on an irrelevant producer of irrelevant hardware and irrelevant software?

    HD?

"So what's not to like about this machine? A few things. The hard drive -- advertised at 60 gigabytes but clocking in at just under 56 -- is roomy enough for now, but I wish Apple had just thrown in an 80- or 100-gig model."

I don't see why the comment about "clocking in at just under 56" was necessary, unless this guy thinks he was swindled out of 4 gigs and in that case knows next to nothing about hard drives...

    Yeah....

That's like him saying... "and it comes with an advertised 15" monitor, but it's only 14.92" viewable!"

    Duh.

    inaccuracies

The high end model is $1799, not $1899, and the ports can be on either side of the machine (not just as the back as suggested by the article) since the LCD can rotate 90 degrees either direction on the base.

    where does he say 3%?

I read the article, he doesn't mention Apple's marketshare, yet he didn't bother to do some research on the ports, and someone overcharged him for the top end model.

    Got my iMac Weds

OK maybe Im missing a more obvious way to turn it on, but the on/off switch is kinda a pain, wish it was on the front or the keyboard still.

Also a front FW port would have been sweet, Since I don't want to leave the DV Video cam or the iPod cable always plugged it, its annoying to reach back each time to remove or install it.

oh and I got one pixel in the screen that is red, can't decide if I should try to warranty it or not

Overall its it a fun machine, glad I bought it

    Don't turn your Mac off

Why do you need to turn your iMac off? =( My phone doesn't even have an off button! But I don't find it too inconvenient!
