    Been there

I've been to Seybold, not really all that impressive compared to Macworld, but if you are looking for printers....that is the place to go. So Apple not being there really isn't that huge of a deal

    Publishing

Apple can't forget their key market...

    The Publishing professionals.

We make up a huge chunk of their market share, and a lot of their "consumers" are professionals buying a computer for home.

This is Apple's most dominant market, yet it is the slowest and it seems to be the least supported in regards to OS X. Not just by Apple but many other developers. A lot of designers would rather leave this industry than have to do their jobs on Windows. So please don't ignore us.

It will be at least a year before I can switch to OS X full time. I think OS X offers more than enough reasons to switch, but it just needs time.

Apple should be at Seybold if only to show the advantages of OS X for the future of publishing and maybe just to show support to push the developers along.

    Soooo

... why do you think that Adobe is so slow moving a X version of Photoshop? The lackluster attention in Cupertino to the Publishing industry might be one reason.. maybe Adobe figures that if Apple is lukewarm, they can be too. As well as Quack Distress. The Denver boys aren't going to be there either.

    Seybold

    I am kind of confused.

Apple is at Seybold. Apple some technology sessions scheduled (see http://www.apple.com/creative/events/seyboldny2002/).

What is that you all want Apple to do there that is not already being done? Are you upset that Apple is not doing one of the keynotes? Or do you think there is some reason why Apple needs to have a booth on the floor showing everyone the new dual 1Ghz PowerMac?

People in the industry have seen Macs before and they are more than likely aware that there are new speedbumped PowerMacs. The new Macs offer Seybold attendees more power but not really any new functionality; what exactly do you think the attendees are wanting to see? I suppose Apple could show off iPhoto, but nice as it is, it really does not offer a whole lot for publishing professionals.

There will be plenty of Macs on display at various booths all over the show floor. There will be many vendors showing their Mac software on Macs and peripherals connected to Macs. There will be dozens of booths showing off OS X software -- you can bet that Adobe and Corel certainly will be.

Apple chose not to pay for a booth on the show floor; instead they are having a series of technology sessions where people can get some real, hands on, useful information. Sounds good to me.

    The Problem

Yes, a complaint, but this is legit:

Mac OS X is seriously being held back in this market because of their PostScript printer driver. Print Center simply isn't up to standards with professionals' needs.

There's all manner of issues, such as incomplete ColorSync support, no support for custom page sizes, lack of many printer-specific features, no font embedding, etc. These issues are keeping my company in Mac OS 9.

Apple needs to remember the Mac OS' roots in DTP.

    re:The Problem

I'm not sure what you are talking about.

I send custom pages sizes to my large format printer all the time, and since the same postscript drivers for Mac OS 9 also work in Mac OS X I get all of the same Printer-Specific Features as I did before. And the PostScript isn't up to par? I would hope so since everything in Mac OS X is PDF, it would kind of have to use Postscript. I also would hope that the industry would embrace Mac OS X becouse of its font support, you are no longer limited to 129 fonts, and Mac OS X's ability to easily use font servers is a huge plus.

Apple doesn't have a booth at Seybold, that is OK, Adobe didn't have one at a recent MacWorld event either, and Adobe still hasn't gone away. Perhaps Apple is trying to cut back on the spending a little, those events are expensive to be involved with. And I am sure you will still feel an Apple presence at the event.
