MacNN Reader 'Skip' notes that a new program entitled "iDVD" could conflict with trademarks held by Apple or Ravisent. "The following link is pretty strange as I was searching for DVD software for a friends PC today... Haven't done the research to figure out if Ravisent or Apple came out with "iDVD" first, but I'd be quite disappointed in either company if they hadn't looked around before choosing this name."

    TradeMark

Apple does not have the name "iDVD" trademarked like it's other products (iTunes, iMovie, etc). It appears this other company does have "iDVD" trademarked.

    iDVD

If this company has iDVD trademarked, as in a registered trademark, shouldn't they be putting the (R) symbol next to it instead of a TM (which, if I understand how this stuff works, basically anyone can put next to something, but it isn't necessarily protected).

    Very old news.

Yeah, this story was posted on Macnn shortly after iDVD was originally released.

    TM mark

Elektrix.. the skinny on the ™ mark is that whenever a product is new it will use the TM mark. It has to go through a series of reviews and qualifications to determine if it really is a unique brandmark. After something has been trademarked for a long time, it can become registered and use the ®. that's why you will mostly only see very well established products or company names using the ®.
