ProSoft clarifies Radialogic status

updated 01:45 pm EST, Tue December 5, 2000

Following up with our early morning post, Prosoft has clarified its statement on the status of its Radialogic subsisidiary. Prosoft will continue support and development of Chaos Master and NetWare, while Storage Master and CD Master have been acquired by an unnmaned company. Prosoft will continue to sell Storage Master and CD Master through December 31, and will support the products through March 30, 2001, but the two products have been discontinued. Prosoft will make an announcement regarding the redirection of the company early next year.

    Could it be Apple?

I wonder who would "need" these products? MicroMat already has support for disk tools, Symantec has its own. AlSoft needs no help...

Who could it be, who could it be?

    Prosoft Seeks Suckers..

to purchase a discontinued product that'll only be supported for three months. Prosoft must think consumers are stupid if Prosft intends, as they say, to sell Storage Master and CD Master until the end of the year and discontinue all support after March. Announcement to anyone who buys these products after today: I have a great deal on buggy whips and a nice bridge I'd like to speak to you about ;-)

    Horrible OEM Treatment

From what I've gathered in talking to some of the hardware vendors that use Radialogic Storage Master, nobody outside of Radialogic and the Mystery Company knew about this until today.

I just hope that the OEM companies that have been forced into bundling their drives with a soon-to-be-discontinued product will do the best that they can to direct their customers to alternate software products. What is the customer (or OEM, for that matter) to do when they receive a hardware product that comes bundled with software that's "frozen in time"?

    For the rumormill

Maybe Apple will be adding CDRW drives to there machines in January. Maybe they need a core to wrap in a brush metal skin. They had already bought DVD Authoring software. One of the iMovie like apps? Could be pretty cool. Just a rumor though.

    I betcha...

that Apple bought Storage Master and CD Master. Think about it. What's Apple's major glaring ommission from all it's product lines? CD-Recordables. It knows this. It's not enough for a company like Apple to just stick the hardware in the machines at the time of purchase. They also have to have a software solution.

Why else would whoever bought these products be wanting to remain anonymous? It's Apple not wanting to tip it's hand before MWSF...

That's just a guess from Switzerland

    Apple's my guess

1st: Steve said today in the conference call taht he messed up with CD-R/RW. Soon after that though he was quick to say he's excited about the new product line.

2nd: Look at the dates. Why would a company stop selling its products less than a month after its bought out? Let see... Dec 31... whats next... Jan 1, 2, 3... MacWorld SF!!!! Also, why would a company drop support so fast. Most companies usely keep support for a good while after there bought out.

3rd: Coincidence? Bought out same day Apple announces bad earnings? I think not.

    Just my 2 sense.

    If Apple = Mystery co.

I hope they don't rewrite CD Master so it will ONLY work with the OEM drives that they will be bundling with their PowerMac G4 line. Apple DVD Player, as we all know, works ONLY with the OEM internal drive and whats worse, ONLY with the ATI Rage class graphic boards (Radeon too I suppose, but I don't know). I just purchased a Que! Fire 12x which I love, and I'd hate to find that it is incompatable with whatever Apple bundles. Apple is notorious for this you know.

    Makes Sense

Supposedly, Storage Master and CD-Master were built with a core that was easily portable to MacOS X ... it makes sense that Apple might aquire these products for future inclusion in an OSX based architecture, especially if they wanted to go the CD-R/RW route...

First they steal (buy) the drive companies' software out from under them, then their customers too? heh heh
