At&T to axe dial-up option

MacNN Reader Norm Rechtman reports, effective February 28, At&T Broadband is eliminating the ability to dial-in remotely with a modem to its service. Users have expressed concern because people who work 'on-the-road' will need to sign-up for a separate dial-up ISP. [At&T has yet to issue an official notice]

    Comcast deal

I suspect it has to do with the deal to sell the AT&T broadband division to Comcast. AT&T Worldnet, which is what they were using for dial-up, will probably stay with AT&T.

    I received that email...

The email said that they had to take the remote dialup services down, but that their users shouldn't worry 'cause they'll still be able to receive email through a new web interface that's coming...soon. Of course this doesn't help you GET ONLINE to do this, but I digress. AT&T is doing some really questionable things lately to their customers. Why, just to make us feel better, they sent us a special note offering $120 of free Real Networks game downloads! Yeee---haww.....

    Adding Insult to injury

I was really annoyed by that letter, and a paper one that arrived, talking about the $140 (yes, even more than $120) worth of game downloads from RealNetworks, which is only available to Windows users!
Once again, Mac users are not even considered. When I worked for MediaOne, I always had to push to make content at least viewable for Mac users and make special offers available to them as well. Now it seems things have gone back to the clueless people who design everything for crappy Wintel boxes.

    Less and less...

    Cut speeds to 1.5
    Crippled pop mail
    Removed dialup
    Can't do DNS worth spit
    DHCP pools regularly depleted
    Senseless hostility to NAT
    Increased price ~10%
    $10 off a bag
    $140 worth of worthless games.
    Woohoo.

    Echo

I will echo what the first poster implied: get earthlink.net service... I have used it for years (I now have earthlink DSL). Great ISP.

    Pay more, get less

Yup, and things are only gonna get worse once AT&T and Comcast complete their merger. You can't reason with an 800-pound gorilla, all you can do is take your money elsewhere... that's all they understand- and even then, only if enough people do it.

I saw the writing on the wall a while back, and ordered DSL. On Sunday, I switched my home network over to it, and I love it. Doing my own damned mail and DNS, and running my own webserver, and everything works great with very few restrictions on what I can do. For only $10 per month more than I was paying Comcast.

    AT&T/Comcast, bite me!

    Stuck

Unfortunately, I can't get DSL in my neighborhood and can only get a maximum of 28.8 kbps dial-up because of the way they have the phone lines compressed/multiplexed (probably why I can't get DSL either). So, the only game in town for me in the way of reasonable-speed internet access is AT&T.

    Re: Stuck

And AT&T is counted on customers who do not have any other choice for high speed internet. I too, have AT&T simply because DSL is not available in my area. It's either AT&T or dialup...

AT&T will continue to s**** us over... and there is nothing we can do about it until the local telephone companies get off their A$$ and fix the local lines so we can get DSL.

    Earthlink

Yep, that $10 plan from Earthlink for 10 hours per month limited access is looking better and better for road use.
