AnchorDesk: will MS pull plug on Mac apps?

David Coursey of AnchorDesk notes that Microsoft's 5-year commitment to build applications for the Mac expires this August: "...Microsoft can stop developing for the Mac anytime after this August. Will it? Probably not. But it must do more than just continue with its so-so support--and raise Mac users from the ranks of second-class citizens."

    Just keep it up

I don't think they're treating us like second-class citizens. I'm quite happy with M$ software, actually.

    what if?

I think this might be the last version of office for mac. Think about it - Microsoft and Apple build competing operating systems. If MSFT can sell you Windows, and the office suite that the "other 95%" use and a host of other apps, why would they bother supporting the competing OS?

    re: what if...

...for the same reason they support it now: $$$ They'll make more money selling to the Mac faithful who wouldn't switch platforms even w/out them.

    Who needs...

Windows Media player... when you've got I tunes, I think apple should try to get WMA codec instead, and half the things he listed isn't really needed... like web page editor, everybody who's smart enough to use a mac should know better than front page, and it's not like MS software for mac are second rate, IE and Office have much more features than win equavilent...

I think Mac Business Unit are doing their best to do top programs for a mac, remember, all these are coming from one department, unlike windows where there are different dev. teams for each prod.

    they don't care...

you think they worry about having a monopoly? the justice dept has proven that only thing that'll happen to them is that they'll get another slap on the wrist.

    Microsoft Mac software

Microsoft will continue to produce Mac software for two reasons. First, as per the earlier post, without Mac OS, Microsoft would have an even larger monopoly. Second is even more important to Microsoft: they make money on Mac software.

If they can't sell Office XP, why not sell Office:mac?

    needs to do better

I agree with Mr. Coursey that Microsoft should try even harder to provide seamless consistency of products between the two platforms such as netmeeting, messenger, etc. As Kevin Brown said early last year, they make good money on Office, so I think we'll continue to see commitment from them.

Having Microsoft onboard is crucial and pivotal to the success of Apple. If not, then everyone will just have to run Windows--through emulation.

Or we'll just have to cut a check to McNealy to custom write StarOffice and reverse Engineer MS Office for compatibility :-)
