Motorla's new 1GHz PowerPC 7455 chip used in the new Power Macs, boasts higher clock speed and lower power consumption than previous versions of the chip and uses a newer manufacturing process that includes silicon on insulator (SOI), making it the first to deliver SOI technology to desktop computers.

    OK then.

If it's such great technology then why did we only see a small increase in speed? (No, I'm not complaining, just posing a question.)

I had my order for a TiBook 667 all ready to go, but now I have to wait for this 7445 to appear in it.

    Hmm!

SOI technology is not at all new considering how fast technology moves... Again Moto is a laggard, took them too long to bring this to the party. Hello, Apple? There's a lovely little company named IBM, you know?!?!?

Um... this is the first use of SOI on the desktop. That's rather significant considering the pace of Moto's processor development vs. Intel/AMD.

    IBM

    IBM won't do Altivec.

Agreements / Licencing / Bullshit ... so don't think that Apple is ignoring IBM just for fun ...

    off topic

I found an interesting spec online...

Is apple ripping off customers with there latest line of G4s?

While they are charging more for the GF4MX than the Radeon 7500 ($100), it seems that the 7500 is a FASTER, MORE POWERFUL card!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Could this be true????

On-line they say that the GF4MX "delivers well over 1 billion textured pixels per second" (1.1 on barefeats)----well is seems that the 7500 beats those numbers: 1.7 Billion/Sec--and the 8500 creams those numbers at 2.7

Apple have you lost the faith???

Could be very embarrasing for apple.

    less warranty. . .

With yesterday's rollout of Apple's new Power Mac G4 systems, the company has announced it will no longer offer on-site service as part of the one-year warranty for new Power Macs

    where is apollo?

funny thing is, the vaunted apollo chip might never see a spot in the powermacs. apollo should be where you see a better increase in speed, but where the h*ll is it?

    altivec

i remeber hearing some stuff boutthisibm thing with altivec but i though they finally accepted its place as its been proven etc? also if apple is able to buy the ppc altivec technology when the time comes as its getting closer then would ibm not have a problem with it? or is it just a belief of thiers that altivec doesnt have a place? personally id rather have mad speeds than altivec any day.
