Quark gives beta testers a discount

updated 07:50 pm EST, Fri January 25, 2002

Quark will be offering a $100 discount on QuarkXpress v5.0 for users who tested it during the beta development stage. This means testers can upgrade from version 4.1 to 5.0 for $200. Quark says in a recent email to its customers that this is their way of saying 'thanks', for time spent beta-testing. The offer expires on February 28, 2002.

    Okay...

I'll be waiting for my email. Doesn't mean I'll be getting it, though. :D

    heh

While Quark tries to woo its beta testers with copies of 5 they already have, I'll be singing along with InDesign in X. Latah for YOU!

    Mean

I'm thin and I like a skinny girl just as much as the next guy, but making fun of Rosie's weight is just unfair.

The other unfair thing is this $100 discount for a Quark upgrade. The entire upgrade price for InDesign costs less than their discount, and Quark 5 isn't even OS X native!!

    pay rate

I guess that reimburses most of the beta testers at a rate of less than $1 per hour.

    Such a deal!

    More of a discount!

What is the deal with Quark? Let's give a better discount boys.

When is Quark going to be native in OS X? I thought that was the reason we are waiting so freaking long for v. 5!!

I can remember not so long ago when firms used to pay or at least give the software for free to beta testers!

    No Way I'm Upgrading

There's no way I'm paying even $200 for a non OS X upgrade. I still haven't switched to OS X yet (waiting on PhotoShop), but QXP 4.11 works perfectly and there's nothing new of note in v5.0. I've already ordered the InDesign 2.0 upgrade and can't wait to get it!

I do agree with some other posts, though, in that Quark releases upgrades so rarely that their cost of ownership tends to be lower in the long run. But I think QXP 5.0 should really be v4.5. Their Carbonized version (whenever that comes out!) should have been 5.0.

I seriously doubt that the OSX version will be a free upgrade from 5.0, though it should be.

At least Adobe lets you upgrade to InDesign 2.0 from either 1.0 or 1.5 for the same price.
