Mattison & Co. research analyst David Bailey said in a recent interview with The Wall Street Transcript that Apple "continues to lead the PC industry in innovation" while their 'WinTel' competitors have "almost ground to a halt" with the release of innovative products.

    all this good press

i wonder if things are changing for Apple. they seem to be getting a lot of press lately, some bad but much of it quite praiseworthy. the fact that Apple has innovation coming out of every o****** these days while the Wintel community is retreating may just be what apple needed to make people stop and seriously consider their products over Wintel.

7% by year's end? not impossible.

    Die! Gateway Die!

Apple will make money, but my gut reaction is that the press isn't going to turn heads. Apple won't sell many machines to non-apple users. Apple will sell LOTS of machines to markets/individuals who already own apple products. I can't speak for the average home consumer, because I'm not one. As a tech enthusiast, I still feel that no Apple computer is adequate for my power needs, at any price I'm willing to pay. Virtually all of my techie friends agree. You'll see them running BeOS before they buy a mac. Reasons include: Too proprietary to self-support, limited upgradeability, rather expensive. As a person who supports Macs, and I'm pretty sure I see more Macs a day than 50% of fellow Macnn readers ever will, Apple is doing a great job at catering to it's audience. Apple is revitalizing its product line, and customers are finding new uses for new technology.

My opinion (which is just an opinion of my observations- not proven in focus groups) is that most people use computers as communication devices (web browsing, email, group chat, IM, etc). Practically any computer purchased in the last 3 years is an adequate communications device. General computer sales will continue to stay relatively low for 2K2 as they were for 2K1. PC clones will suffer this year as a result. Apple will sell relatively well because it can market a different idea “Digital Hub” to it’s audience. It won’t lose money, but because its audience is primary Mac Owners, it won’t increase market share.

The whole thing on market share is overblown. The windows monopoly is M$’ to lose, and Microsoft will hold at nothing not just to see Windows market share maintained, but extended to other areas (X-Box, Pocket PC, .Net, WebTV, Home Station). Apple doesn’t need to be the majority PC builder to stay; it only has to receive more dollars than it spends. It does that now. It does that because it is able to cater to its customers, who are willing to spend more money on computers than average households. The world uses both OSs, I use both Oss, the world is big enough for both.

    Wintel Innovations

almost ground to a halt? What's it all mean?

I can't think of a single Wintel innovation.

    Re: all this good press

The fact that Apple, with only 5%, has been getting so much press good or bad is quite interesting. I agree that it's plausible that Apple could at rise to at least 6 maybe 7% by years end if they play their cards right. I would suggest Apple go after Gateway (soon to be former Gateway) customers but they have absolutely no taste so it would just be a waste of resources. Regarding the recession, Jobs says he'll "innovate Apple through this" and that might be just what they need because people want to see that, it makes them feel that things aren't so bad, they don't want to see companies retreating in the trenches until it's all over. Apple could can really benefit from the "underdog as hero" approach if they approach it the right way, which lately they have been doing.
