FireWire Keychain housing ships for $100

updated 09:55 am EST, Wed January 23, 2002

WiebeTech today announced pricing for its FireWire KeyChain, a high speed, portable FireWire-based, keychain-sized storage device which supports capacities of up to 1GB using nonvolatile CompactFlash storage modules. The company also says it has reduced the physical footprint of the FireWire KeyChain and will offer "empty" modules for $100, allowing users and dealers to install any size CompactFlash module. It is expected to begin shipping to end-users by the end of March.

    Nice idea, except...

Unless that picture is wrong, all I see on it is a female socket for firewire, and not a male plug. How useful is that when you still have to have a cable handy to use it? I've wanted a USB storage keychain for the fact that it's so simple and easy. Plug it in, copy files, unplug it. No cables, no power, no problems.

    I agree...

It's a very cool idea, but it looks like it came with a box of cereal. Why can't people get it through their heads that form is actually part of the purchase...

As soon as they can come out with one that can plug directly into a firewire port and actually looks halfway decent they'll have my money in a heartbeat.

    Actually ...

This was probably a good idea on their part. Unless the male end was long enough, I couldn't imagine plugging this into my PBG4 because of the screen hinge placement.

    Shipping

I think "Ships" is a little strong. Actually, it won't be available until March - and unless I am mistaken, the unit will cost $200 since the "housing" is $100 (read, shell) and the memory module is another $100.

    butt ugly

Why would you want something that hideous on your keychain? Plus it looks like it would be terribly uncomfortable in your pocket. Then add in the extra cost of the storage media (since this is just a case). F' that. I assume just get an iPod and get something useful for my $.

    Slick!

Okay, it's ugly. But strip the paint off the box and it could be cool!

As far as cables are concerned, just get an 8" or 12" FireWire cable from FireWire Depot. I have several (both sizes) and they're great. Especially for daisy chaing several FireWire devices or jus lugging an extra cable around.

    Uh, right.

Someone's going to attach that horrid blue brick to his/her Lexus keychain.

And carry it in my pocket? No thanks. The point of a "keychain" device like this is it's always with you. I'm not going to have my backpack with a firewire cable always with me.
